Gianluigi Donnarumma seals £27m Man City transfer after being cast aside by PSG

By staff2 September 2025No Comments5 Mins Read

Manchester United have completed the transfer of Gianluigi Donnarumma from Paris Saint-Germain after the Italian was cast aside by the Champions League winneres this summer

Manchester City have confirmed the signing of Gianluigi Donnarumma from Paris Saint-Germain for £27million. The 26-year-old has joined City on a five-year deal that will keep him at the Etihad Stadium until 2030, with the option of an extra year.

Italy No.1 Donnarumma will wear the number 99 shirt for the City and becomes their seventh signing of the summer following the arrivals of Rayan Ait-Nouri, Tijjani Reijnders, Marcus Bettinelli, Rayan Cherki, Sverre Nypan and James Trafford.

Donnarumma, who has made 486 career appearances, started his professional career with AC Milan in 2015, becoming the second-youngest goalkeeper ever to debut in Serie A, aged 16 years and 242 days.

After six years with Milan, Donnarumma moved to Ligue 1 with Paris Saint-Germain, where he won 10 major trophies and played 104 games, helping PSG win the Champions League for the first time last season.

The move sees Manchester City sign a third goalkeeper of the summer after they brought Trafford back to the club from Burnley in a £27m deal and picked up ex-Chelsea backup Marcus Bettinelli. The 22-year-old has already encountered an early mistake during his time in goal for the Citizens in defeat to Tottenham.

On joining City, Donnarumma said: “To have signed for Manchester City is such a special and proud moment for me.

“I am joining a squad packed with world-class talent and a team led by the one of the greatest managers in the history of football in Pep Guardiola. This is a club every player in world football would love to join.

“I have admired watching Manchester City for many years – so to now be able to play for the club is a huge honour and a privilege. I cannot wait to meet my new team-mates, the staff and the fans. Playing at the Etihad Stadium will be very, very special for me.

“I’m very excited for what lies ahead and can promise that I will give absolutely everything to try and help the club achieve even more success.”

City Director of Football Hugo Viana said: “Gianluigi’s pedigree, quality and record speaks for itself, and we are all absolutely thrilled he has joined us here at City.

“He has accumulated a wealth of top-level experience and knows what is required to achieve success on a sustained level.

“From a remarkably young age, he has played at the very top level. That is unusual for a goalkeeper and it means he arrives here as one of the best in the world in his position. There is no doubt Gianluigi will bring further quality and depth to our top-class goalkeeping department.

“Everyone here is very excited to welcome Gianluigi to Manchester City and we wish him all the very best during his time here with us.”

The Italian arrives after the exit of club legend Ederson was confirmed the morning after the window closed. Ederson won six Premier League titles during his time at The Etihad, as part of a trophy haul which contains 16 major honours.

He issued an emotional statement following the news he would be joining Turkish giants Fenerbahce. “I leave Manchester City incredibly proud of what we have achieved together, and I am honoured to have worn the shirt so many times.

“Under Pep, we have won dominated the Premier League and conquered Europe. It has been amazing.

“I would first of all like to thank him and Head of Goalkeeping Xabier Mancisidor for making me the best goalkeeper I could be and teaching so much about the game.

“I must also thank my team-mates. Our desire to win every game we play has been a joy to be a part of and that has made me relish every day on the training field or in the dressing room with every one of you.

“Finally, the fans. Thank you for making me feel at home in a city so far away from where I am from and for supporting me throughout what has been an amazing period for me and my family.

“I arrived in Manchester eight years ago full of hope, but I could not have predicted such a beautiful time together.

“Playing for City has been the most special time of my life and I will always be a fan of this special club. I’m going with my wife and children, but I’m leaving a big family here, Cityzens. Once a Blue, always a Blue.”
