Granddad-Turned-Author Publishes Quirky Children’s Books After Retirement

After a lifetime working as a lorry driver, mechanic, and police officer, Glyn Davies has embarked on an unexpected second act — becoming a published children’s author in his seventies.

Davies’ writing journey began more than 30 years ago with Trevor the Tractor, a short tale crafted while stranded in a broken-down lorry. Originally written as a bedtime story for his daughter, those early drafts have grown into a charming published collection adored by children and parents alike.

“I wanted my stories to be a legacy for my grandchildren and great-grandchildren,” said Glyn Davies. “If I can make people laugh along the way, that’s a bonus.”

Inspired by everyday scenes and nostalgic memories, Davies’ stories introduce a vibrant cast of characters, from the mischievous Catastrophic Santa to the heroic Phartman. His books embrace classic slapstick humour, influenced by comedic greats like Laurel and Hardy and Charlie Chaplin, whose work shaped his childhood.

After travelling extensively throughout Europe and the Middle East during his career, Davies chose to self-publish via Amazon, turning what began as a family project into a heartwarming example of creativity at any age.

“Growing old is a privilege, but growing up is optional,” he added. “I’ve always loved making people smile, and I’ll keep writing for as long as I have ideas.”

Davies’ books are available on Amazon and through his personal website, offering timeless entertainment for “anyone who’s still a kid inside” — no matter their age.
