Police have issued an urgent update after a gunman opened fire from a 4×4 at a trading estate

18:16, 02 Oct 2025Updated 18:25, 02 Oct 2025

A gunman is on the loose after firing from a 4×4 in broad daylight.

Armed officers were called to Lufton Trading Estate in Yeovil, Somerset, at 12.45pm on Wednesday following reports that a firearm had been discharged from a vehicle. The suspects quickly fled the scene, and despite a manhunt involving ground teams and a police helicopter, no arrests have yet been made.

Avon and Somerset Police have since seized the vehicle believed to be involved – a red 4×4. While police say there is no wider threat to the public, they are urging anyone with information to come forward.

Inspector Roseanna Green said: “We know the news of this incident is likely to cause concern, but we’d like to reassure everyone we have not found any information to suggest there is a wider risk to the general public.”

She added: “Officers remain at the scene today carrying out vital work as part of this investigation. Detectives are following up on all lines of enquiry to track down those responsible. To make sure we are there for the community, extra patrols are planned in the area.”

Inspector Green urged anyone with concerns to speak with officers. Avon and Somerset Police is asking anyone with information to get in contact.

The force said in a statement: “An investigation is underway following an incident involving a firearm in Yeovil yesterday (Wednesday 1 October). Nobody was injured, however we received a report of a firearm being discharged from a car in the Lufton Trading Estate at about 12.45pm.

“Those responsible quickly left the scene in the same car. Searches of the nearby area were out by firearms officers on the ground with the support of the National Police Air Service helicopter, but proved negative. A car believed to be have used in the incident, a red 4X4, has since been located and seized.

“We’d ask anyone else with information, or relevant footage from the area, to please contact us on 101 and quote reference number 5225275680. Alternatively, please contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111 or via its website.”
