Pictures show huge flames after the explosion in the Spring Hall Lane area of Halifax which led to a blaze breaking out and casualties rushed to hospital

Three people have been rushed to hospital after a huge explosion and fire tore through six homes in Halifax last night.

Huge flames could be seen towering into the skies last night after the explosion rocked the Spring Hall Lane area of the city just after midnight. West Yorkshire Police said the occupants of 14 houses have been evacuated. Two individuals, both from the same property, sustained serious injuries, while a third person from another house has been treated for minor injuries.

West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed they were called to the scene at 12.06am after receiving reports of a large explosion.

Five crews were sent to tackle the blaze alongside the technical rescue and command unit. They used large jets and aerial ladders to put it out. There are also reports that an air ambulance was seen landing at the car park of an Asda nearby.

Their statement read: “Police were called to Coventry Street, Halifax, at 12:04am this morning to a report of an explosion. Officers at the scene assisted with closing the road and evacuating the occupants of 14 houses.

“Two people from one property were taken to hospital with serious injuries and a third person, from another property, has received treatment for minor injuries. The cause of the explosion remains under investigation.”

The cause of the blast is currently unknown.

In a statement, the fire service told Yorkshire Live: “We were called at 00.06 this morning to Spring Hall Grove to reports of an explosion. We sent five crews, plus the technical rescue and command unit. The explosion had affected 6 houses.

“Crews used large jets and an aerial ladder to extinguish the fire. Three people were taken to hospital. YAS and WYP also in attendance.”

Northern Gas Networks said: “Our engineers were called to attend an explosion in the Spring Hall Lane area of Halifax at 12.30am this morning. We are working closely with the emergency services to the incident.”
