Halifax warning for any customers using one service as ‘charges may apply’

By staff23 October 2025No Comments2 Mins Read

A customer asked Halifax what limits would apply to them

Halifax has clarified its cash withdrawal policies following a customer’s query. The customer asked on social media about the bank’s rules for withdrawing cash over the counter and whether there was a “set amount” that could be withdrawn.

In response, Halifax stated: “The limit per day is £2,500 without notice. Anything over that needs to be pre-ordered with a minimum of 48 hours.”

According to the Halifax website: “You can withdraw up to £800 a day from a cash machine. The daily maximum cash withdrawal over the branch counter is £2,500, unless you have pre-ordered a higher amount.”

“If you wish to withdraw more than £2,500 in cash, you will need to give your branch advance notice. When making large withdrawals, you will need to prove your identity.”

Withdrawing money at a Halifax cash machine is free, but the bank warns that charges may apply when using other cash machines. The bank’s website states: “Halifax won’t charge you, but the cash machine owner might. Check for charges first.”

Halifax is planning to shut three branches in November 2025, including:

  • Bolton – November 25
  • Hexham – November 11
  • Wickford – November 10.

If a branch is closing in your area, it’s worth checking if a banking hub is opening or has opened nearby. These are central hubs run by the Post Office, where you can access banking services for many of the big name banks such as Halifax.

Banking hubs can be used for withdrawing cash and making deposits. The Post Office also provides some basic banking services, such as cash withdrawal at the counter or ATM, depositing money, or checking your account balance.
