The Lake District has been named the ‘happiest place in the world’ after beating the likes of Australia’s Gold Coast and Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia in a new study

The Lake District has been crowned the ‘happiest place in the world’, beating out competition from Australia’s Gold Coast and Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia. This revelation comes after travel insurance experts at InsureandGo analysed thousands of holiday snaps posted on Instagram to determine which destinations have the happiest tourists.

The study involved examining 100 popular global holiday spots, collecting a sample of photos from famous tourist attractions within each location. Facial recognition technology was then used to analyse the expressions of visitors, assigning each an average ‘smile score’.

Cumbria’s National Park topped the leaderboard with an impressive smile score of 88.4 out of 100, with most of its photos depicting visitors grinning from ear to ear during their trip to the UK region.

The Lake District, home to England’s highest mountain, Scafell Pike, and countless picturesque villages and breathtaking views, offers plenty to smile about.

It seems that even the notorious British weather can’t dampen the spirits of those visiting this stunning part of the country, reports Devon Live.

Scafell Pike may be a well-known draw in this area, but there’s a wealth of other attractions and activities that never fail to wow tourists. Wastwater, England’s deepest lake nestled within the national park, is a sight you simply can’t miss.

Stretching over three miles long and diving 260 feet deep, the lake is cradled by towering mountains, providing the perfect setting for some truly stunning snaps.

The Lake District also lays claim to some of the UK’s darkest skies, making it an ideal spot for stargazing once night falls.

One of the best places for this is Ennerdale, a secluded valley in the North West of the Lake District, renowned for its untouched wilderness feel and some of Cumbria’s darkest skies.

Naturally, no visit to the lakes would be complete without indulging in some water-based fun. With over 16 lakes dotted across the region and a stretch of coastline, there are plenty of opportunities for hiring boats, canoes, swimming, and even trying your hand at windsurfing and paddleboarding.

There’s no shortage of accommodation in the Lake District either.

For example, the charming market town of Keswick offers a wide range of attractions for visitors, from shops and eateries to points of interest such as the Keswick Museum and Art Gallery.

Here, you can also organise boating trips around Lake Derwentwater, and with numerous bike hire shops on offer, it’s the perfect place to start a scenic cycle ride.
