The fantasy-adventure series stars Derry Girls’ Louisa Harland as a young woman framed for murder in 1705 England
Disney+ has announced the release date of a new action-adventure series from Happy Valley creator Sally Wainwright. Streaming in March, Renegade Nell stars Derry Girls actress Louisa Harland as the titular Nell Jackson, a young woman who is framed for murder and forced to a life of crime in 18th-century England.
The British fantasy series follows the quick-witted and courageous Nell as she goes on the run with her sisters and turns to highway robbery to survive. Aided by her superpowered sidekick, a plucky little sprite called Billy Blind (Nick Mohammed), Nell soon realises that fate has put her on the wrong side of the law for a reason, a reason much bigger than she could have ever imagined: to defeat a magical plot against the Queen of England.
Renegade Nell is fronted by Derry Girls’ Harland, who stars alongside Fear the Walking Dead’s Frank Dillane, The Sinner’s Alice Kremelberg, The Lazarus Project’s Ényì Okoronkwo, Line of Duty’s Craig Parkinson and Ted Lasso’s Nick Mohammed as Billy Blind. The eight-part series is written and created by BAFTA-winning Happy Valley creator Wainwright, with Sex Education’s Ben Taylor serving as lead director.

Speaking to Disney in 2021, executive producer Faith Penhale praised Wainwrights creation of an “utterly original [and] endlessly entertaining world.“
“In Nell Jackson Sally has conjured up yet another instantly iconic female lead,“ she said. “Her wit, warmth and boundless capacity for invention will make our journey through Nell’s riotous imagined life a very special ride indeed and viewers of all ages around the world will love the way Sally blends history and magic to create an utterly original, endlessly entertaining world.”
