Thomas Tuchel will take on the England manager’s job permanently, with the German already earning the respect of Three Lions skipper Harry Kane – who played under him at Bayern Munich
Harry Kane appears to have backed Thomas Tuchel to be successful as England manager.
The discussions between Tuchel and FA chiefs rapidly progressed on Tuesday, with the former Chelsea boss now signing a contract to become the new Three Lions boss.
Tuchel has an outstanding CV from winning the Champions League and impressed while navigating difficult times at Chelsea with the ownership issues. He has been out of work since leaving Bayern Munich at the end of last season, where he worked with England skipper Kane.
And the striker has now hailed Tuchel as a ‘fantastic coach’, as he signalled his delight at his former manager’s links with the job. The Bayern star was speaking before the news emerged that Tuchel had signed his deal – but he appears to be in agreement with the decision.
Kane told Sky Germany: “To be honest, I haven’t heard anything specific about it yet. That’s why I can’t really comment on it until it’s officially announced. We’ll have to wait and see what happens.
“I obviously know Thomas very well from the last year. He’s a fantastic coach and a fantastic person. I’m sure the FA will contact me when they know more about this issue.”
Tuchel has remained on the Bayern payroll after leaving his position at the end of the season, effectively meaning he has been on gardening leave.
He played a key role in convincing Kane to join the Bundesliga giants in the summer of 2023 from Tottenham. The striker highlighted Tuchel’s plans as a pivotal reason for him to move to the Allianz Arena.

“Thomas told me his ideas, where he sees me in his team, what we need and how I can improve the team. He invested a lot and that impressed me. “Thomas has good tactical ideas and knows how to play,” Kane told Kicker.
“He brings passion and good energy when he walks into the locker room. I love listening to it and learning. Thomas and I talk a lot about football, we talk about matches and what he needs from me. I’m here at Bayern and I’m focused on that.”
Kane started on Sunday as the Three Lions defeated Finland, having missed the defeat to Greece last week through injury. Following the win at the weekend, interim boss Lee Carsley outlined his belief a ‘world-class coach’ was needed for the full-time role.
“I’ve not really thought much about it. I keep saying the same thing. My remit was six games and I’m happy with that. This is a privileged position. I’m really enjoying it but I didn’t enjoy the last two days,” he told ITV.
“I’m not used to losing in an England team, I don’t take losing well. People are always going to try and put their chips on one side. I’m in the middle. My bosses have made it clear what they need from me. This job deserves a world class coach who has won trophies and I am still on the path to that.”
