An all-German last 16 clash takes centre stage in the Champions League on Wednesday night and while Bayern Munich will play host to Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen at the Allianz Arena, they won’t be able to wear their home shirts
Bayern Munich will NOT be wearing red when they host Bayer Leverkusen at the Allianz Arena in the Champions League on Wednesday night.
The German giants return to European action for an all-Bundesliga clash against Xabi Alonso’s men in the last 16, having edged out Scottish champs Celtic in the play-off round.
Bizarrely, so far throughout the tournament, Harry Kane and co have had to wear their away strips when playing at the Allianz Arena. And Wednesday night will be no different.
UEFA have banned the Bavarians from wearing their red home shirts in Europe’s premier club competition this season. European football’s governing body have taken issue with the dark numbers on the red jersey.
They claim that the numbers do not offer enough contrast for viewers watching either from the stands or on television and that it is understood to be a violation of the visibility regulations. As such, Bayern have been forced to wear either their black or beige strips on home soil.
Modifications will have to be made to their home shirt if they want to wear red in the remaining games of this season’s Champions League. But they’ve held off until this point, and the suggestion is that Die Roten have no intention of changing tact now.
They meet Leverkusen with Bayer’s star man, Germany international Florian Wirtz, understood to be Bayern’s No.1 transfer target for this summer. Bayern powerbroker Uli Hoeness has further fuelled speculation by saying he would like to see the 21-year-old play for Bayern.
The two sides have already met three times this term, with both league matches ending all square and Bayer claiming a 1-0 win at the Allianz in the German Cup earlier in the season.
