Harry Maguire’s Greek court case delayed AGAIN with Man Utd star desperate to clear name

Harry Maguire’s retrial in Greece has been delayed for a fourth time with his original arrest coming more than five years ago, but the Manchester United star is still determined to prove his innocence

Harry Maguire’s retrial in Greece has been postponed for the fourth time with the Manchester United star now having to wait until March next year to clear his name.

It has been more than five years since the England defender was arrested on the Greek island of Mykonos. The much-delayed hearing was due to begin in Syros on Wednesday morning and Maguire’s defence team were in court ready to defend the Englishman. However the wait will go on and extend into next year.

A possibility exist that Maguire’s case will never come to trial at all because the statute of limitations in Greece takes effect after eight years, which would be in August 2028, reports the Daily Mail.

Maguire was arrested in the summer of 2020 following an altercation on a family holiday and convicted of assaulting a police officer and attempted bribery. He was handed a 21-month suspended sentence, but the conviction was automatically quashed on appeal under Greek law.

The 32-year-old does not have a criminal record as his original conviction was ‘nullified’. He insists he is innocent.

Maguire did not have to attend the trial in person. The first delay came back in May 2023 because his defence counsel was unavailable. Later in in February 2024 it was put back due to the Greek lawyers’ strike and then again in March of this year it was delayed.

The defender was originally found guilty of repeated bodily harm, attempted bribery, violence against public employees and insult. His brother Joe, 33, and pal Christopher Sharman, 34, were accused of clashing with rival fans and police outside a nightclub. Joe Maguire and Sharman got a 13-month suspended sentence. All three deny the charges.

A source close to the United star previously said: “Harry is frustrated this is continuing to drag on after more than five years. Whist he remains determined and confident that he will clear his name, he remains bemused his fundamental defence rights have not begun to be addressed.”

In an interview about the incident following his return to the UK in 2020, Maguire said: “Some people will believe me, some people won’t. But one thing I would say about Mykonos is that I have no regrets. My conscience is so clear about what happened that night.”

Maguire has continued to focus on his football and remains a crucial part of the squad in Manchester. He’s currently enjoying some downtime during the international break with his England snub continuing. He’s not played for the Three Lions for 13 months.
