A passenger at Heathrow captured on video the moment sewage and murky water fell from the ceiling at Terminal 5 on October 27, onto a baggage carousel, making the area smell
Passengers at Heathrow Airport were left holding their noses after a suspected “sewage” water leak fell onto the arrivals baggage area.
A customer has captured on camera the moment where ‘sewage’ water fell from the ceiling above a baggage carousel at Terminal 5. The footage shows murky water cascading from the ceiling onto a baggage carousel at approximately 8:45 am on October 27, 2024.
One flyer, who jetted in from Edinburgh to the capital city, claimed the stench of “urine and old sewage” hit them as they neared the scene. Preferring to remain anonymous, the passenger recounted: “As we were walking through I could hear water dripping. I thought it was raining but I noticed it was nice and sunny outside.”

They continued, describing the moment of unpleasant realisation: “As I got closer, we got this sewage-smelling aroma.” They witnessed water drenching the conveyor belt, pushing what seemed like sewage across people’s bags, and remarked: “It was a strong urine and old sewage smell.”
Heathrow Airport has since confirmed that the affected area was promptly cordoned off from staff and travellers alike. A spokesperson for the airport said: “Imediately after the incident was reported the area was closed to passengers while engineers work to fix the fault. There was no impact on operations.”
This is not the first issue experienced at Terminal 5 this year. Back in June travellers expressed the terminal was in “complete chaos” after an IT fault with British Airways’ allocation systems caused lengthy delays and lost luggage.
In a statement at the time, Heathrow Airport announced: “We are supporting British Airways with a technical issue with their allocation system. We advise passengers to check with BA before travelling to the airport. BA passengers in Terminal 5 may be impacted and are advised to contact BA for assistance. No other airline is impacted.”
