It is home to a secluded beach that offers incredible views and a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life – but keep an eye out for adders
For those looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of busy beaches, Bradwell-on-Sea is a haven. The stunning views and sandy shoreline are unusual on this stretch of coast, making it seem even more special.
However, this paradise-on-earth comes with a catch: occasional sightings of adder snakes, the UK’s only venomous snake. Usually appearing from hibernation during March, adders have in previous years been spotted in Essex as early as February.
This aside, the area is a walker’s paradise due to its close proximity to the Saltmarsh Coastal trail, which covers 75 miles of breath-taking coastline in the Maldon District.
The beach’s scenery is defined by its rugged, unspoilt beauty, offering panoramic views across the estuary. On clear days, visitors can see for miles, enjoying the sight of boats gently swaying on the water, reports Essex Live.
Culture website Muddy Stilettos has hailed it as one of Essex’s best-kept secret beaches in 2024. The website raved: “Bathed in a cream crush of cockle shells, Bradwell’s small stretch of beach marks the point where River Blackwater meets the North Sea and it’s an atmospheric find”.
They continued: “Overlooked by monasteries and chapels, oyster sheds and layers of salty grey mist, consider this your new go-to hideaway when the weather won’t play ball. Why not embrace the drizzle anyway and walk the tides in peace?”
One local visitor shared on Google Reviews: “Good view. The Chapel Beach car park is a bit too far from the beach. Public facilities, such as toilets, cafes are a bit far too. I would recommend avoiding woods and jungle as adder snakes spotted here”.
Another tourist commented: “Although Bradwell Beach isn’t brimming with facilities, it’s ideal for those who prefer a quieter, more natural coastal experience. We brought a picnic, and there were ample spots on the grassy areas to sit, eat, and take in the views. It’s a very peaceful place, with few visitors, which at times made it feel like we had the whole beach to ourselves.
“Overall, the visit to Bradwell Beach was refreshing and peaceful. It’s an excellent spot for a relaxing afternoon, especially if you’re looking to unwind with good company.
“The combination of coastal scenery, fresh air, and quietude makes it a great destination for anyone wanting to disconnect and appreciate nature.”
