High street retailer to close 83 stores for one day and gives staff extra pay

By staff24 October 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

It has become a festive tradition for this retailer to give its staff time off on December 26, to say thank you for all their hard work over the year

High street jewellery chain Beaverbrooks is closing all 83 of its stores this Boxing Day and will give staff an extra week of pay.

It has become a festive tradition for Beaverbrooks to give its staff time off on December 26, to say thank you for all their hard work over the year. The family-run chain has also hired 50 seasonal roles across its head office and selected stores this year.

Beaverbrooks was founded in 1919 by Adlestone brothers Isaac, Harry, and Maurice, with its first shop located in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

Anna Blackburn, Managing Director at Beaverbrooks, said: “Strong family values are at the heart of our business, and so we want to give our wonderful colleagues some much-deserved time to relax and connect with friends and family after a busy festive period.

“We believe that putting our colleagues first in every decision we make is key to creating a stronger, more engaged workforce, which helps our people to deliver exceptional levels of customer service.

“Hopefully we inspire other businesses to follow in our footsteps this year. We’re also delighted to be welcoming seasonal recruits to support our teams through the festive period.

“Their contribution will be invaluable in helping us to deliver the outstanding service and experience our customers expect during our busiest time of year.”

Beaverbrooks is not the only store to close on Boxing Day. Home Bargains has confirmed it will once again close for three days over the Christmas period.

The budget retailer has kept its stores closed on Boxing Day and New Year’s Day in recent years to give its hard-working staff a break – and this year will be no exception. All stores will be shut on Christmas Day as well, as usual.

In a post to Facebook, Home Bargains said: “Christmas announcement. All of our stores will be closing for Boxing Day & New Year’s Day.”

M&S started keeping its stores closing on Boxing Day in December 2020 to say thank you to staff for their hard working during the Covid pandemic. Last year, M&S said it kept stores closed “in order to give our colleagues a much-deserved extended break with their family and loved ones”.

Aldi has confirmed it will close all of its stores on Boxing Day once again. Aldi will close on Christmas Day and then reopen as usual on December 27.

Its stores will also be closed on New Year’s Day as usual, reopening once again on January 1, 2026. Opening hours will vary in the days leading up to Christmas.
