H&M shoppers can get £5 off next shop with little-known scheme

Customers can bag a £5 digital voucher to put toward their next purchase using the scheme

H&M shoppers could get £5 off their next purchase using a little-known scheme that encourages customers to return unwanted clothes. The retailer’s website says that H&M members who take part can get 20 points and a £5 digital voucher to spend on a £25 purchase.

You need to sign up for membership and fill a bag with unwanted clothes, and you’ll receive a voucher to spend in-store or online. The fashion retailer says: “Bring your unwanted textiles to us. We’ll make sure they get re-worn, reused or recycled. Earn 20 points and a £5 digital voucher.”

It doesn’t matter if the items weren’t purchased from H&M. However, they should be clean. H&M explains: “H&M has recycling boxes in all clothing stores around the world. Bring your clean, previously loved clothing or textiles to one of our stores—they can be from any brand.

“Drop off your unwanted textiles in a H&M store in the garment-collecting box — usually next to the cash desks, and you’ll be rewarded with a voucher.”

The retailer says its customers have gathered over 172,000 tonnes of preloved clothing and textiles since 2013. “Through collecting, sorting, reselling, repurposing and recycling, we can give many of these items a second life,” it adds.

H&M’s membership is free, but there are age restrictions. As per the website’s FAQ section, you have to be 18 to join or 16 with consent from your parent or legal guardian.

Several shoppers have shared their success using the scheme on social media. In one popular video, a shopper who posts on TikTok as @kally_209 said the tip has saved her a lot of money.

She told followers: “Come with me to recycle old clothes at H&M in exchange for vouchers. Now, this process is really simple and easy. I do it a couple of times a year, and it definitely saves me a lot of money as I buy a lot of my kids’ clothes from H&M.”

Walking shoppers through the steps, she added: “There’s only really three conditions, the first being they only accept recycling bags of clothes, so no footwear; the second being that you must be a H&M member and have the app; and the third being you can only recycle a maximum of six bags every six months.”

Content cannot be displayed without consent

Kally found her experience simple and thought it was well worth the effort. “It’s really simple, you just bag up your old clothes, take them into store, let a staff member know you’re here to recycle goods. They’ll take you to the drop-off box, you drop your bags in there, and then they’ll give you a QR code to scan,” she shared.

“Now, you get one voucher per bag you recycle. So I had three bags this time, so I got three vouchers. They’ll pop up in your app under my benefits and then my vouchers, and you get a £5 voucher for every £25 purchase. It definitely saves you a lot of money.”

H&M’s website states: “When you bring a bag of textiles to an H&M store for recycling, you will earn 20 points and receive a £5 digital voucher that can be spent online or in store. The transaction must be £25, excluding any delivery costs, before you apply the voucher.

“Vouchers can be used in store by scanning the code in your account at the till. Vouchers can be used online by applying the discount at checkout or in the basket.”
