Devon and Cornwall Police was called by the ambulance service to the Asda store in Paignton, South Devon on Sunday after a man suffered a fatal medical episode

A man has died after suffering a medical episode in Asda after heroic shoppers were seen trying to save him.

Devon and Cornwall Police was called by the ambulance service to the store in Paignton, South Devon on Sunday at around 11.20am.

The shopper, who was understood to be on holiday in the area, was grabbing a trolley after entering the store when he collapsed. He then suffered a seizure, reports say. Before paramedics could arrive, shoppers and members of staff from Asda carried out CPR. Despite their best efforts, he couldn’t be revived and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Devon Live.

Man, 23, offered remote consultation after collapsing in street but no ambulance

Boy, 9, killed in horror accident at his home as family left devastated

On the Spotted Paignton Facebook group, the driver who had just dropped him off at Asda minutes before he died posted: “To all those who helped the man who sadly passed away in Asda Paignton yesterday I’d like to say thank you for all of your help. I was the driver who dropped him off.

“He was a true gentleman who was telling me how much he loves Devon and Paignton especially. He walked over to grab a trolley and just collapsed.

“A lady ran to his side and was with him until the end. He was down on holiday with his mum who thankfully was informed in person of his passing. I just wanted to say thank you to those that made him comfortable, a real credit to Paignton.”

A spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police said: “We were called by the ambulance service to Asda in Paignton at around 11.20am on Sunday August 24.

“A customer, a man in his 50s, was reported to have suffered a suspected medical episode and was confirmed deceased at the scene.

“His next of kin have been informed. The death is not being treated as suspicious, and a file will be prepared for the coroner.” The Mirror has contacted ASDA for comment.

It comes after the 46-year-old wife of former cricket star Duncan Pauline died following a trip to the supermarket. The ex all-rounder has been left “absolutely devastated” after his wife Wiyada lost her life during a trip to get get groceries earlier.

Emergency crews rushed to the Waitrose in Esher, Surrey, at around 6pm on Wednesday after receiving calls of a “concern for safety” at the store.

Both the high street in the town and the store itself were closed as medics tried to save her life, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Mr Pauline, 64, spoke of his anguish after announcing the passing of his partner, who was looking forward to retiring to her home country of Thailand in the months ahead.
