The DIY and garden chain has given itself a deadline of next Friday to have the shops sold, otherwise they may be at risk of closure – after it collapsed into administartion last week

Homebase has put 74 of its stores up for sale days after it collapsed into administration in a major blow to the high street.

The DIY and garden chain has given itself a deadline of next Friday to have the shops sold, otherwise they may be at risk of closure. Last Wednesday, Homebase brought in consultancy firm Teneo as administrators – who were able to sell the business to retail giant CDS, which owns The Range and Wilko.

It meant saving the jobs of 1,600 employees across 70 sites, which are now all set to be rebranded as The Range stores.

In August, Supermarket giant Sainsbury’s confirmed it was taking over the leases of 10 Homebase stores in the UK as part of a deal with the retailer’s owners Hilco Capital. The deal was completed in September, and the new sites are set to open by the summer of 2025. Sainsbury’s said the deal – which included the redesign of the new stores – would cost it £130million overall.

But administrators have now placed 74 remaining leasehold Homebase stores on the market. The news comes after Homebase was found to be waiting on around £5million of tax rebates before its collapse.

The 74 sites on the market include 62 in England, four in Scotland and another four in Northern Ireland. There are also three stores in the Republic of Ireland and one in Wales going up for sale. All will currently continue to operate as normal.

Damian McGloughlin, chief executive of Homebase, said last week: “It has been an incredibly challenging three years for the home and garden improvement market. My priority is and continues to be our team members, and I recognise that this news will be unsettling for them.”
