Greater Manchester Police said the officer was left needing hospital treatment after being hit by the vehicle near Stockport, with the injuries understood to be ‘serious’ – and a teenager arrested
A police officer has been seriously injured and rushed to hospital after being “deliberately” hit by a car on a Sainsbury’s car park near Stockport.
Officers arrived at the Cheadle Royal store’s car park at 11.55pm on Saturday, January 25, while investigating Class C drug use. Greater Manchester Police says the officer was left needing hospital treatment, with their injuries understood to be serious, but not life-threatening.
A 19 year-old man was later arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, the force said. Police received a report of people acting suspiciously inside a vehicle in the car park. As the responding officer walked towards the vehicle, she reported that the vehicle was driven at speed towards her, hitting her.
The officer was taken to hospital for treatment of her injuries. A force spokesperson said: “A police officer has been left with injuries requiring hospital treatment, after reporting being deliberately hit by a car whilst investigating reports of Class C drug use in a car park on Wilmslow Road, Cheadle at 11.55pm last night, Saturday, January 25 2025. Enquiries are ongoing to identify those involved. The officer is being supported by senior colleagues at Stockport.”
Chief Inspector John Picton of the Stockport district said: “This incident is truly shocking, and shows how quickly situations our frontline officers attend can escalate. There is absolutely no explanation as to why this incident needed to end the way it did. Our officers go to work every day to provide an outstanding service to the communities they serve, and achieve fantastic results in situations that are often challenging.
“Assaults on our officers are completely unacceptable and won’t be tolerated. In this case, the officer suffered serious injuries. Our investigation is continuing, and the officer is being supported by all of us at the Stockport district. She is recovering well.”
