Hotel cleaner names the one area in your home you should always clean first to avoid germs

By staff14 July 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

One expert hotel cleaner says there is one area you should ‘always’ tackle first before doing anything else, as it’s a nightmare for spreading germs and other nasties around your home

There’s nothing quite like stepping into a freshly cleaned hotel room, with its pristine sheets and gleaming surfaces. It’s clear that professional cleaners know their stuff when it comes to making a room spotless.

Many of us have attempted to recreate this fresh and clean feeling in our own homes. Now, a professional hotel cleaner has revealed the secrets to achieving this, emphasising the importance of focusing on the right areas.

Lisa Williams, Executive Housekeeper at The Grand, York, insists there is one area you should ‘always’ clean first, as it’s a hotbed for germs.

If you’re keen to bring that hotel standard of cleanliness to your own home, then it’s crucial to pay attention to what are known as the ‘high touch’ points before anything else, reports the Express.

Lisa explained: “The most important thing to remember when beginning a clean is to dust and sanitise all the high-touch points first. Things like door handles, light switches, taps and handrails can be easy to miss later on, but host bacteria due to regularly being touched.

Starting with these areas ensures you don’t continue to spread any germs around the room during the rest of your clean, and can make the biggest difference to a room looking and feeling tidy.

Once you’ve finished with the high-touch points, you can then move on to low-touch point areas like mirrors, windowsills and light fittings, and follow up with hoovering or mopping the floor.

Lisa explained: “Cleaning a room in this order ensures that you are being as efficient as you can be.”

She then suggests that once your room is spick and span, adding a few little extras can transform it into a space that rivals the luxury of a five-star hotel.

Lisa’s top tip is to step into the shoes of a visitor – even if you’re not expecting company – as it provides a new angle on the room and brings attention to the minor details you might overlook, such as a dusty mirror or a lopsided cushion.

To cap it all off, Lisa advises giving the room a quick spritz of a fragrant scent to make sure your place feels fabulous and welcoming, whether it’s just for you or potential guests.
