Households told to ditch pegs when outdoor washing this summer

By staff19 July 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

Many people prefer to dry their washing outside rather than use hangers inside during the warmer months but using pegs could be causing some damage to your clothes

When the sun’s out it’s time for the great British tradition of using pegs to hang washing in the balmy summer air – but fashion experts warn this classic method could be harming our favourite garments. While basking in the glory of sun-dried laundry, we often overlook the potential pitfalls – something Superdry has highlighted as we eagerly hang our clothes out to dry.

The popular clothing brand notes a word of caution about peg usage: “Take caution when using clothes pegs, as they can leave unsightly and potentially permanent pressure marks on delicate fabrics.”

If you have a love for delicates, listen up: steer clear from pegs, as they might just wreak havoc on fragile items. Superdry advises the fashion-conscious among us stating: “Additionally, you can enhance the whitening effect further by lightly spritzing clothes with white vinegar before hanging them outdoors, helping the sun to keep your whites looking fresh.”

Yet, the brand points out a snag that comes with the territory of traditional outdoor drying: “However, some fabrics will become stiff if dried in this way, especially those made from natural fibres like cotton.”

Their savvy suggestion? Mix it up a bit: “To avoid this, try partly drying outside and finish off with a few minutes in the tumble dryer.”

Another top tip to diminish the dreary ironing pile is stretching out creases before pegging garments out or plonking them onto the drying rack. It’s simple advice, but it might just save you time and preserve your threads, reports the Express.

One tip is to shift your clothes airer outdoors, mimicking the effect of line-drying without the hassle of pegs. Summer is the perfect time for this, as the clothes air-dry much faster.

As another heatwave approaches, making the most of the sunny weather to dry your laundry will result in quick-drying and pleasantly fragrant clothes. And if you want to avoid peg marks, this simple and helpful trick will work wonders this season.
