Households urged to cut up old tea towels to keep slugs away from plants

By staff13 May 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

Slugs and snails can be quite invasive when it comes to plants, especially during the warmer months when they’re looking for moisture. But you can keep them away using just a towel.

With the arrival of spring and summer comes the increase of slugs and snails digging through plants, on the lookout for food.

With more gardening jobs piling up in preparation for the warmer seasons, there’s nothing more frustrating than seeing your garden being damaged by the mollusks. But don’t worry, a practising gardener has shared some tips and tricks for keeping them away.

By following this simple trick, gardeners will protect their plants from the unwanted invasion of slugs and snails, which typically damage their plants and flowers. Plus, it’ll help keep the garden tidy and organised for the summer months, which is the perfect time to gather with family and friends.

Under the TikTok username @thegrowdenwithglen, Glen shared the techniques that he has tried to avoid slugs and snails coming after his beautiful plants. His tip quickly went viral online, and it seems to work quite well.

Slugs and snails tend to invade gardens, especially during the rain, because they get attracted to the moisture. It’s also the perfect method for them to stay protected during the warm and dry weather and avoid dehydration.

In the 38-second video that has accumulated 82.1k views, he said: “The trusty old towel can help you save them when they’re outside, so get yourself an old tea towel which is rough and coarse, not smooth and cut strips which are lengthwise.”

“This will then give you enough material for this next method. Go and find the young plant which you want to protect, then wrap the material around the base of the plant and not touching the stem,” he added. Glen explained that by doing so, it will act as a slug barrier, by also allowing in moisture “up cycling for free and saving your plants.”

Reusing old towels instead of spending unnecessary money is also an eco-friendly method. It’s an easy tip that doesn’t require a lot of effort, and the best thing about it is that it keeps the slugs and snails away, as well as other pests, making your garden safer for pets and children.

You don’t have to be an expert in gardening to make keep your outdoors as tidy, vibrant and pest-free as possible, but just have some passion and willingness to keep plants and flowers to thrive and survive for the longest time possible.
