Thanks to gardening expert and writer Simon Akeroyd, your fresh strawberries and other produce will remain untouched from unwanted pests by doing this simple DIY task.

Now that summer has arrived and it’s strawberry season, these fruits are as sweet and tasty as ever. Therefore, gardeners need to take care of their fresh produce and keep it away from any unwanted guests.

Not only are strawberries easy to grow and a favourite to humans, but they’re also quite popular amongst wildlife animals like birds and squirrels. Therefore, it’s important to take early action to avoid stealing them all before you get a chance to taste them.

But don’t worry, gardening expert and social media personality Simon Akeroyd has got all of our backs. In a one-minute TikTok video, he shared the best way to avoid these two pests eating your delicious strawberries.

In his caption, he mentioned: “I don’t use nets to protect the fruit because birds can get caught in them, and squirrels can tear through nets. So instead, I’ve made some wooden frames covered with chicken wire and placed them on top of my raised beds.”

In the video, Simon gives a detailed explanation and demonstration on how to protect your fresh produce. The gardening guru starts by cutting wooden frames to size and crewing them together.

Then, he covers them with kitchen wire and puts them on top of the strawberries. He wrote: “Hopefully this will allow me to eat the strawberries before the squirrels, birds and my spaniels.”

Simon Akeroyd is a garden writer and the author of 30 gardening books. One of his books is titled “50 Ways to Outsmart a Squirrel, and other garden pests.” In his free time, Simon helps the gardening community by posting tips and tricks on social media, especially on TikTok.

He has a current following count of 804.1k followers and 12.6 million likes. Simon’s videos range from how to keeping your fruits and vegetables safe from wild animals, to ways of growing your own fresh produce to save some money and unnecessary trips to the supermarket.

Although creating your own protection from scratch might be a hard and time-consuming task, this will ensure that your strawberries and other fresh produce stay away from my animals whilst still being able to remain outdoors to soak in all of the sunlight.

By doing this simple task, gardeners will be able to keep their produce untouched. Even better, their garden spaces will remain tidy and organised – and there’s no better feeling than a clean and thriving outdoor space.
