Hugh Jackman’s estranged wife Deborra-lee Furness has officially filed to end their marriage, two years after the couple announced their decision to separate
Deborra-lee Furness has filed for divorce from Hugh Jackman two years after the pair decided to split. The couple announced their separation in September 2023.
At the time, they said they had spent almost three decades together but were seeking to develop “individual growth” but their family remained their top priority. But two years on, 69-year-old Deborra, has officially filed the divorce proceedings in a New York court house on May 23.
Records seen by the Mirror show that her lawyer, Elena Karabatos, filed several other notices, including a proposed qualified medical child support order, a certificate of dissolution, the settlement and a proposed judgment of divorce, which is still pending.
As the judgment of divorce is still pending, a judge needs to sign it off before the judgment can be officially made. Deborra, who adopted two children with Hugh, 56, is believed to have received a “handsome spousal support payment”.
A source claims there will be “no drama” between the pair once their marriage is officially dissolved. “A settlement was reached that Deborra is pleased with which includes a handsome spousal support payment,” a source said.
They went on to tell the Daily Mail: “There was some back and forth regarding this financial agreement but, in the end, she got what she believed she deserved. Both are coming out of this financially secure. There is not going to be any drama with this gives closure that she needed.”
Meanwhile, another source claimed that the divorce is “not contested”, stating that there wasn’t a huge disagreement between the estranged couple. It’s believed that they had worked out the details in advance and all issues, including a settlement, alimony and expenses for their children, had been decided.
“They are amicable and they are both fully committed to being the best parents that they can be,” the source added. Meanwhile, Deborra has hit out at Hugh, who is dating actress Sutton Foster and was spotted walking with her while holding hands just days before the divorce proceedings were filed.
She said that her “heart and compassion” lay with people who had endured a “traumatic journey of betrayal” and while it may hurt, she believed that a higher power was working for her. “This belief has helped me navigate the breakdown of an almost three-decade marriage,” she said.
Deborra went on to add that since her separation, she has gained knowledge and wisdom. “It can hurt, but in the long run, returning to yourself and living within your own integrity, values, and boundaries is liberation and freedom,” she added. Announcing their split in 2023, a joint statement from the couple read: “We have been blessed to share almost 3 decades together as husband and wife in a wonderful, loving marriage. Our journey now is shifting and we have decided to separate to pursue our individual growth.
“Our family has been and always will be our highest priority. We undertake this next chapter with gratitude, love, and kindness. We greatly appreciate your understanding in respecting our privacy as our family navigates this transition in all of our lives.”
The former couple first met on the set of the Australian TV series, Corelli, in 1995, with Hugh describing Deborra as a “big star” as he had just come out of drama school. They went on to marry a year later.
