Hydrangeas will ‘thrive’ better when grown near 3 ‘easy-to-maintain’ plants

By staff16 June 2025No Comments2 Mins Read

Hydrangeas are a popular garden plant – and for good reason. They come in a huge variety of colours and many burst into bloom year after year, giving us all the more changes to enjoy them

The onset of summer is nearly upon us, and what better way to embrace it than by basking in the sunshine. Avid gardeners are well aware that maintaining a beautiful garden requires considerable effort, with each plant requiring specific care to flourish. Hydrangeas are among the most beloved garden plants, and it’s easy to see why.

They offer a vast array of colours and many bloom annually, providing endless opportunities for enjoyment. However, companion planting – positioning them alongside other plants – can also significantly enhance their growth. Companion planting involves cultivating specific plants together to foster a natural equilibrium.

The concept is that these plants will mutually support each other’s growth and prosperity. This method enhances soil quality and can bolster other plants’ strength, improve resistance to pests or diseases, and even attract beneficial insects and pollinators. Here are three plants that can boost your hydrangeas’ vitality year after year, reports the Express.

Azaleas

These flowers bloom in spring, ensuring you’ll enjoy months of blossoms before they retreat for winter. If you’re nurturing blue hydrangeas, white or yellow azaleas are an excellent choice, as they share the same soil preferences.

Ferns

Ferns make ideal companions for hydrangeas due to their similar requirements, but they also introduce a contrasting texture and pattern to the garden. Ferns are one of the best choices for low-light areas as they prefer shaded spots.

Perennial geraniums

Moreover, these plants thrive in partial shade rather than full sun. Plus, they’re a favourite amongst butterflies and bees, making them an excellent choice for inviting more wildlife into your garden.
