‘I asked boss why pay was 2 weeks late – her 4-word response left me gobsmacked’

A woman has shared her shock over her boss’s reaction after she asked why her pay check was two weeks late – and after sharing her response online, she has been urged to find a new job

While it’s important to enjoy your job, most people work to earn enough money to pay their bills and keep themselves fed. That’s exactly why one worker gently confronted her boss to enquire why her pay check was two weeks late – believing this to be a reasonable and understanding question to ask.

However, she was left gobsmacked by her boss’s response and has taken to social media to ask users whether she’s in the wrong for questioning things. She said: “My last pay check was late. Not by a day or two almost a full week. I waited a couple days, thinking maybe it was just a delay.

“But when nothing came through, I went to my manager and asked about it. Calmly. Just said, ‘Hey, I haven’t been paid yet do you know when it’ll go through?’

“She gave me this look and said, ‘You don’t need to come at me with that kind of tone.’ That surprised me, because I wasn’t being rude. Just direct.”

A few hours later, she was called into the office and handed a formal four-word warning for “unprofessional attitude towards management”.

Baffled, she added: “All for asking where my pay check was. No apology. No explanation. Just a write-up and a message: don’t speak up unless it’s convenient for them.

“The check finally showed up two days after that. Still no acknowledgment that it was late. Honestly, I’ve worked hard, stayed late, picked up shifts and this is how they respond when I ask to be paid for it?

“It’s not the warning that bothered me most. It’s the fact that I started wondering if maybe I had done something wrong… just for asking to be paid on time.”

While most users urged her to start searching for a new job, others blasted the boss for her own ‘unprofessional attitude’.

Commenting on her post, one user said: “Think about lending someone money who’s a delinquent. Every time you ask about it, they get offended.

“In fact, if they ever do respond to you, or even make a partial payment, they act like they’re doing you a favour. That’s what you’re dealing with. Look for a new job, obviously.”

Another user added: “Report, report, report. The moment your check wasn’t on time, is the moment you should have started a report with the Department of Labour.

“If you were 10 minutes late to work with no explanation, would your boss give you the benefit of the doubt? I really don’t think they would. So, you stop working, make that report, update your resume, and find new employment.”

A third user said: “That is 1 billion percent the biggest red flag possible that you should be looking for another job. Because the one you have won’t exist very soon.”
