A woman who dined at Nando’s has warned others to be wary of one ‘hygiene mistake’ she made. She said she’ll be doing things differently next time she eats there
Nando’s customers might think twice about getting a refill from the restaurant chain’s drink stations after fan Wendy Glancy voiced her hygiene concerns on TikTok.
Advising her followers, she urged others to “promise” they won’t make the same mistake she did. From her Nando’s seat, she shared: “So everybody just goes up and presses the same lever to refill their drink – and they’ve just drank out of that.”
Wendy advised using a finger to press the lever rather than the glass directly. “Because if someone has sickness and diarrhoea or a cold and then they go up and refill their drink, they’re pressing their dirty refill of their glass on the lever and then you’re going and putting your glass on that lever as well,” she explained.
She questioned the practice, saying: “How is that allowed to happen? I don’t think it’s in all Nando’s now though – I think some have a button you press instead.”
It’s not all doom and gloom though – Wendy still relished her meal, which wasButterfly Chicken with lemon and herbs, spicy rice, and broccoli. She noted: “I love the broccoli in Nando’s,” before concluding: “But just think twice about the drinks machine next time you visit.”
The video sparked quite the debate among her 267,000 followers on TikTok, meanwhile. While some agreed with her concerns, one respondent admitted: “I know, it makes me feel sick. I’m a proper germ phobe and I love Nando’s.”
Another chimed in, voicing their angst: “Omg never thought about that! And cold sores and impetigo! Thanks Wendy.” A third said: “I look at things like this so much more since Covid began! I would never touch an elevator handle again or even anything in public, I use my sleeve if necessary. Thank you for the tip.”
While a fourth shared their appreciation: “Excellent idea Wendy, I just never give that a thought in the past, definitely going to do that in future.”
However, not everyone was on board, with some TikTok users brushing off the worries. A seasoned Nando’s fan wrote dismissively: “I’ve been going to Nando’s and doing this for over 15 years. You’ll be fine hun.” With a hint of sarcasm, another said: “And the world kept spinning.”
And a third commenter highlighted an unavoidable risk: “They hand you the glass – what if they went to the toilet and didn’t wash their hands, you can’t protect yourself all the time.”
A Nando’s spokesperson said: “We take the hygiene of our restaurants and equipment extremely seriously. All our teams regularly check and sanitise the drinks machines, which are designed in such a way to ensure cleanliness and hygiene can be maintained. Our glasses are also disinfected with every wash.”
