A ham and cheese toastie from Harrods has gone viral on social media but one food lover was left divided after he tried it for himself – and he said one big thing was missing
The classic British lunchtime staple, the humble sandwich, is usually a wallet-friendly option. But sandwich fans are now intrigued about a luxurious, viral ham and cheese toastie on offer at Harrods for a cool £10.
This is not just any toastie; it’s described as “an indulgent toastie made with truffle bechamel, gruyere and new Harrods own label truffle honey ham available from the charcuterie counter”. The high-end department store’s TikTok account boasted: “Truffle ham and cheese toastie, anyone? With glowing reviews from truffle fans and sceptics alike – it’s the ultimate way to finish off your shopping. Find it on the sandwich counter in the Fresh Market Hall on the Ground Floor.”
But the question on everyone’s lips is whether this toastie is truly worth the tenner. The inclusion of truffle certainly bumps up the price tag beyond that of your average toastie. Carmie Sellitto is a food enthusiast who’s no stranger to Harrods’ pricey offerings, having recently splashed out £75 on grapes from the luxury retailer.
With an impressive following of over 840,000 on his TikTok account @touchdaylight, Carmie decided to put the sandwich to the test, exclaiming: “I can’t believe I spent £10 on this.”
Filming his review from his car, he presented the toastie in its takeaway box, noting its uncut presentation which made it tricky to handle and the fact that it was only toasted on one side. “I saw this and it caught my eye because I was like why is a ham and cheese toastie £10,” he remarked, while also praising the bread’s enticing aroma along with the scent of truffle.
Carmie, fresh from his recent critique of Harrods’ £180 strawberries, weighed in on the toastie, saying: “The cheese is really nice, it’s also got some truffle in there. The bread not being toasted here is a bit annoying because like I get a bit of crunch with a bit of soft bread.”
Wrapping up his review, the famed food taster declared: “I’m going to be real, the flavours are really good. Like you know, it’s some really high quality ham, some really yummy cheese and some really nice truffle. But the crunch is just missing for me and that’s the only annoying thing about this sandwich.”
Following his taste test, Carmie rated the sandwich a modest 6 out of 20. He remarked that had the sandwich been both cut into triangles and perfectly crisped on both surfaces, he might have scored it a solid 9.
Disbelief was the response from one fan who stated: “One side not being toasted is wild.” Another said: “If both sides aren’t toasted, it’s a no from me.” An additional comment suggested an improved experience if it had been properly toasted: “If that was toasted both sides, would be banging.”
While another toastie enthusiast gushed: “Omg all my favourite things,” in response to a different review video. Someone else observed: “Looks nice but the toastie looks a bit soft, not crispy.”
