I compared supermarket orange juices — the winner was cheaper than Tropicana

By staff5 August 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

I decided to try orange juice with bits not from concentrate, comparing cartons to the popular Tropicana. I scored them out of 10 and the results were interesting

Refreshing, slightly sweet, but tangy-that’s what you want from orange juice. But with so many on the market, it’s hard to know which is the tastiest.

That’s why I recently decided to test supermarket juices to see how they compare to one another. I tested juices from Asda, Morrisons, Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Lidl, Aldi, Waitrose, and M&S, comparing them to Tropicana.

I decided to try orange juice with bits not from concentrate, which means that, although slightly pricier, the juice is directly extracted from oranges and bottled, with no water being added back in. The taste test was super interesting, and I was surprised by the results.

1. Aldi – £1.75 for 1L

Aldi’s orange juice had a great flavour which wasn’t too sweet nor tangy, but the consistency was slightly too thin for me, reports the Express.

Score: 5/10

2. Lidl – £1.75 for 1L

Lidl’s juice had a thicker consistency than Aldi’s and tasted more of orange, but I couldn’t get past the squash-like flavour.

Score: 3/10

3. Morrisons – £2.25 for 1L

Morrisons juice had barely any bits present despite shaking the bottle a number of times. I wasn’t a huge fan as it was a bit watery and lacked flavour.

Score: 4/10

4. Asda – £2 for 1L

Despite purchasing one with bits, the bits in Aldi’s juice were lacking, and it was a bit too citrusy for me.

Score: 3/10

5. Tesco – £2 for 1L

This supermarket orange juice had a weird consistency and was slightly too thick to the point it felt like I was drinking a smoothie, despite giving it a good shake.

Score: 1/10

6. Sainsbury’s – £2.25 for 1L

Sainsbury’s orange juice smelt and tasted fresh, and it easily clinched the top spot in my orange juice taste test.

Score: 10/10

7. Tropicana – £2.50 for 900ml

I had high hopes for Tropicana’s orange juice, but I couldn’t distinguish between the flavours. It was tasty, but not worth the price point.

Score: 8/10

8. Marks and Spencer – £2.25 for 1L

I had high hopes for M&S’s orange juice, but it’s the same price as Sainsbury’s, and I much preferred their juice over this one.

Score: 6/10

9. Waitrose – £2.35 for 1L

Waitrose’s orange juice had a great consistency and a good amount of bits, and if you’re a fan of more sour juices, you’d love this one.

Score: 5/10

Final thoughts:

Sainsbury’s juice took the top spot for me, and despite being pricier than its competitors, it was well worth it. It’s also crucial to remember that the taste of orange juices is entirely subjective, and while I don’t like mine too bitter, others might.

Prices may fluctuate, but at the time of writing, these were the prices in my local shops.
