A man has gone viral on social media after sharing the unique way he dodges spending money on expensive rent prices, opting instead to live in a campervan in a major UK city
In a bold move to avoid to the soaring cost of living, one Londoner has ditched conventional housing for life in a campervan.
With tenants in London expected to fork out at least £650 per month for a room in a shared flat according to the Office for National Statistics, with prices reaching up to twice as high in Zones One and Two, it’s not surprising that people are seeking alternative housing.
To boycott the increasing rents, one man named Lewis decided to get away from the traditional housing market and instead make his campervan into her permanent home.
Sharing his van life adventures on TikTok, Lewis has opened up about his new digs — a campervan he resides in permanently.
He kicked off with a video showing off his morning ritual as a corporate worker in London, which begins by peeking outside for traffic wardens, followed by him fixing breakfast on his van’s fitted hob.
While making his morning coffee, Lewis explained why he quit traditional accommodations: “People often ask me if it’s difficult living in a van in a city – it is. But not as difficult as paying a grand a month to a property conglomerate based in Dubai for the pleasure of sharing a flat in Catford.”
He then moved on to share how a day in his life working from home in a van looks like, detailing how after breakfast and a walk, he settles into his van for the day’s work. As night falls, he tidies up and heats leftovers for dinner, enjoying his meal with a TV show on his computer.
“It’s the middle of February and it’s freezing in the van tonight, so time to put on my jim jams and get under the covers where I can sleep easy, knowing I’ve gone the whole day without making any landlords richer,” he said at the end of the video.
In a follow-up clip, he reveals his alternative routine when heading to his Holborn office, starting with a gym session and shower before breakfast in his van.
He then catches the tube from the closest station where he’s currently parked, joking, “Safe in the knowledge that even though I own a campervan, I’m still well and truly rooted in the Matrix.”
Lewis then made sure to clarify his living situation in the caption of the video, after some people expressed their worry about him in his first video.
“Disclaimer: i’m not homeless, i have an ok paying job, i am loved and i am warm,” he said.
Despite his disclaimer, viewers expressed concern in the comments, with one saying: “Genuinely enjoy these videos but don’t enjoy the fact you live this life purely because prices are ridiculously high. Stay safe brother.”
Lewis hit back saying: “i can afford to rent a flat dude pure choice but thank you! “.
