I ditched UK for sunny country where my salary doubled – I’ll never go back

By staff1 October 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

One UK migrant said it is no wonder so many Brits make the move and never leave as they are able to enjoy an “incredible life” in the sunshine with a better work-life balance.

If you’re fed up with Britain’s dreary weather, you’re certainly not the only one. Each year, thousands of Brits abandon their lives here and relocate to Australia – and you might be amongst the next wave.

Workers with specialist skills are being urged to consider relocating to South Australia as part of a massive recruitment campaign targeting key industries.

The current initiative seeks professionals in sectors such as healthcare, education, construction, engineering, and public services to address critical staff shortages.

Clarette Goodhead is one success story – a teacher who made the leap five years ago and saw her salary double, reports the Express.

She praised the exceptional quality of life, particularly highlighting the superior work-life balance.

Clarette said: “It’s less performance driven and I have more time for myself and a life outside of school. I’m able to switch off and then have my own life outside of work. You don’t live to work, you work to live here, and work doesn’t dominate everything.”

Students also face reduced pressure within Australia’s education system compared to Britain, with emphasis placed on pupil wellbeing, smaller classes and ongoing assessment rather than high-pressure examinations.

Financially, Clarette’s Australian salary nearly doubles her previous UK earnings. She said: “There’s a reason why so many British people come over to Australia and never leave because they see what an incredible life they can have here, and it really is the best decision.”

If you fancy making the switch, you can visit the Move to South Australia Roadshow which will stage events in Birmingham, London, Newport in Wales, Glasgow and Manchester.

There, you can meet face-to-face with bosses seeking to sponsor skilled workers alongside government representatives and fellow UK expats.

Louisa Newstead, Director of Population and Migration at the Department of State Development, said: “Every year, hundreds of UK residents make the move to South Australia, drawn by exciting career opportunities, world-class education, and a relaxed, welcoming lifestyle.

“With strong demand across health and care services, construction, education, and technology, combined with lower living costs and a Mediterranean climate, it’s no surprise that many UK migrants quickly feel at home in South Australia.”
