‘I finally won on McDonald’s Monopoly but couldn’t believe what happened next’

After claiming a prize in this year’s McDonald’s Monopoly promotion, customer Chloe McClure was frustrated after it was nowhere to be seen in a delivery by Royal Mail

A McDonald’s customer has expressed her dismay despite “finally” winning a prize on the fast food giant’s annual Monopoly promotion. This year, McDonald’s Monopoly ran from September 10 to October 25 and offered diners the chance to bag a variety of major prizes including £100,000 in cash, LG OLED televisions from Curry’s and JBL headphones.

Whilst smaller prizes such as Big Mac meals could be redeemed in restaurants, others could be sent away for – which Chloe McClure discovered at her expense. “POV [point-of-view]: you finally win McDonald’s Monopoly and this happens,” she cursed in a caption alongside a TikTok video.

Chloe went on to claim: “Clearly someone at Royal Mail wanted it too.”

Her short clip showed her holding a package delivered by Royal Mail, concealed in a transparent bag. However, a note on the bag read: “Our sincere apologies. We’re very sorry your item has reached you in this condition.”

With contact details regarding claims of loss and/or damage, it continued: “Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience or upset this may have caused.”

Chloe vented: “Royal Mail, is this a joke? You’ve just given me a scrappy cardboard box.”

Writing in response, one TikTok user advised: “Royal Mail makes millions a year in profit, always claim!” To which Chloe replied: “They make way too much profit to not be hiring humans to handle packages rather than robots. They could improve their reputation and create jobs! But greed wins.”

A postwoman pointed out: “Unfortunately we have to still deliver even like that. Us posties find it so embarrassing! But we do as we are told.” Chloe conceded: “No I completely understand! My postie is honestly fantastic and always writes the cutest notes and I have so much appreciation for her.

“It’s just the absurdity of being given a scrap of the box my item was in and told IF something is missing I MAY have a claim. But my annoyance lies with Royal Mail the company – absolutely not the people working for it. I’ve obviously had a joke saying someone’s nicked it but I’ve said in the same sentence how difficult/ridiculous/unlikely that is and praised the people who are working non stop in what is realistically quite a demanding job.”

Meanwhile a third individual shared another tip, penning: “So, when the post man or woman hand the item over to you, you have every right to refuse the parcel and have it returned to the sender.”

And a fourth TikTok user poked fun at Royal Mail’s ‘if anything is missing’ wording. Chloe couldn’t help but add sarcastically: “Such a kick in the teeth. Oh nothing, Just the contents and 95% of the box.”

In response to the incident, a Royal Mail spokesperson said: “We’re sorry to hear of this customer’s experience and would encourage them to get in touch using the contact details on the package.

“Items pass through a large, complex network involving automated sorting machines and manual handling and while the vast majority are delivered safely, on rare occasions, like this one, an item may be damaged. For example, if a letter or packet is caught in machinery.

“When this happens, we’ll still deliver the item in a protective ‘damage bag’ with a letter explaining how to report the issue.”

McDonald’s has also been invited to respond.
