A mum who gave her daughter one of the top 100 most popular names for girls has said that she regrets her decision because of one thing people always do when they meet her

There’s a lot to think about when it comes to choosing a name for your baby. Parents often consider any possible nicknames the name might have, while it’s also not uncommon to ponder over the spelling – especially if there are multiple popular options. But no matter what name you settle on, there will always be some people who aren’t fond of it, or who might have no idea how it’s supposed to be pronounced or spelt.
This is the problem one mum is having after giving birth to her daughter almost one year ago. She explained she gave her child a name that ranked within the top 100 most popular girls’ names in 2024, but people always make one mistake with it that’s caused her to regret her choice.
In a post on Reddit, the mum said she chose to name her daughter Margot, but whenever people have to read it out loud – such as at doctor’s appointments – they always pronounce it incorrectly.
She said: “My daughter is almost a year old. We have met multiple people and introduced our daughter, and they like the name. On paper, no one gets the name right! We’ve had [problems at] multiple paediatrician appointments, insurance calls, urgent care – anywhere where her name is on paper. No one gets it!
“I think it’s in the top 100 for girl names, so I truly don’t get it. Her name is Margot. We get Margaret, mar-joe, mar-got, and sometimes they just give up and just say our last name.”
In the comments of her post, the mum stated she is from Texas. According to What To Expect, the name Margot fell just out of the top 100 in the US in 2024 at 148th – just behind Margaret, the name she most often gets instead, at 132nd. There was also an alternative spelling – Margo – that ranked at 542nd, which eliminates the confusion caused by the ‘T’ at the end.
While in the UK, Margot was the 53rd most popular name for girls in 2024, according to the parenting website Bounty. This popular moniker was chosen far more frequently than Margaret, which did not rank in the top 100 at all.
Commenters on the mum’s post were baffled by people’s inability to pronounce Margot. Many of them said it’s a popular name that “should not be difficult” to say – especially since famous people like Margot Robbie, Margot Fonteyn, and Margot Kidder carry the moniker.
One person said: “People are just weird. This name should not be difficult.” Another added: “People should definitely know how to say that correctly. Don’t second-guess yourself. It’s a beautiful name.”
