Beauty and wellness editor Laura goes on holiday the Lake District every year, and has found the perfect clothing for this time of year – including a flattering zip-up top
I wouldn’t ever call myself a practical dresser, but as a travel writer who’s been on holiday to the Lake District for many years in a row now – trips that involve all types of weather and lots of walking – I think I’ve nailed what to wear when visiting in autumn – including some great high street finds.
I recently spent a weekend hiking the scenery around Cumbria’s Grasmere and Lake Windermere, where we experienced every weather possible: bright sunshine, heavy downpours and flooded pathways. Yet I stayed dry and comfortable, and it was largely thanks to wearing this £17 breathable zip-up top.

I wore the MyProtein MP Women’s Training 1/4 Zip Top over the top of a cotton T-shirt when out and about during the day, which usually costs £26 but is currently reduced to £16.99 as part of MyProtein’s Impact Week sale.
There’s currently limited stock in this particular design on the MyProtein website so if yours isn’t available, the MP Women’s Power Ultra Regular Fit 1/4 Zip Top is a very similar alternative (and only £8.99).
What I liked about wearing this was that it was light enough to not make me too hot when the sun was out, yet kept me warm when it disappeared behind clouds. It’s also sweat-wicking (handy during strenuous hikes), lightweight and crease-proof and, I think, quite slimming. It’s also great for running and yoga.
Here’s what else I wore on my autumn walking holiday…
Adanola leggings
I swear by Adanola’s Ultimate Pocket Leggings, £39.99 – I not only wear them on big walks but also to pilates and most days when I’m at home, whether working or relaxing.
They’re super high-waisted but don’t dig in, and the pocket on the side is perfect for holding your phone.
Salomon walking boots
They may not be the most stylish item of footwear I own but I’ve got so much wear out of these Salomon Exvantage Mid Waterproof boots, now reduced to £120; supportive, comfy and without needing to be broken in, for me they’re worth the money.
The North Face jacket
This jacket isn’t for wearing during the very depths of winter but when the weather’s changeable, like in September, this is ideal – it’s wind- and waterproof, and packs down to easily fit in your bag when you’re not wearing it. The toggle hood will keep any rain showers out too. It’s currently reduced down from £125 to £75 here.
