‘I spent £175 on a square watermelon and was gobsmacked when I looked inside it’

A man was left floored when he tried a watermelon that almost set him back £200 – but he kept trying to justify why it cost so much, saying it was so ‘juicy’ and tasty

Quirky foodie purchases are all the rage at the moment, with some brands charging hundreds of pounds for items you’d usually be able to pick up in a supermarket for just £2. However, that didn’t stop influencer Carmie Sellitto from being sucked into the hype and purchasing a square-shaped watermelon. But was it worth the hefty £175 price tag?

Carmie, who often shares food reviews with his 1.2 million followers on TikTok, decided to purchased the cube-shaped fruit to see whether it was worth the extortionate sum, and to compare it to your average watermelon. Although he didn’t confirm where he’d bought it, Panzer’s Delicatessen in London sell an identical square watermelon for £175.

First off, he showed how it was different to the rest by allowing people to see it was wrapped in a gold ribbon.

“Why was it so expensive?” he pondered as he inspected the fruit. When the content creator, from London, opened the fruit, he was blown away by what he saw. He guessed the price may be due to the unusual colouring inside, likening it to a “Neapolitan ice cream”.

After taking a bite to see if it was worth the money, he said: “Wow, this is good. Look how juicy it is!”

Carmie even went one step further and referred to it as “the best watermelon” he’d “ever eaten” in his “life”. Despite its huge and eye-watering price tag, he said that he didn’t expect it to “taste as good as it does”.

Holding it upside down to let juice pour out, Carmie demonstrated how moist the fruit was.

He added: “It’s confusing because it tastes so much sweeter than an actual watermelon, and it has barely any seeds inside. Maybe that’s what you’re paying all this money for.

“I’m going to rate this an easy 10 out of 10. Best watermelon I’ve ever tried in my life”.

Square-shaped watermelons are produced in Japan and are typically only available from Asian supermarkets.

The video review amassed almost 30,000 likes and had hundreds of comments from viewers who were stunned at the price of the watermelon.

Someone explained: “That is just a regular watermelon put inside a plastic cube and then grown”.

“I still won’t pay that kind of money for a watermelon,” another viewer insisted.

Others shared that they thought “it looked the same as a £2 one from Aldi”.

Another fan questioned why he was chomping on the outer part of the fruit, to which Carmie replied: “For £175 I’m eating everything”.

The TikTokker previously reviewed the most expensive coffee in the UK, which costs an eye-watering £265 – and was far less successful than the watermelon review.

Carmie said: I thought it tasted just like a normal coffee. I couldn’t believe this place was selling a coffee for this much money.

“It obviously wasn’t worth the £265. You could get something for £3 that would taste exactly the same”.
