A woman has taken to social media to share the discovery she made after taking a DNA test – but she doesn’t know whether she’s happier knowing the truth or not
A woman doesn’t know whether to laugh or cry after uncovering a 60-year-old secret when taking a DNA test on a whim. Growing up, she says she has always felt like the odd one out because she has dark hair and a curvy figure, while her three sisters are all “tall, blonde and thin”.
However, she never once thought about why this could be and simply accepted it. That was until she decided to take a DNA test due to their increase in popularity and to learn more about her ancestry. Taking to the Reddit thread, ‘Do you regret taking your DNA test, why or why not?’, she said: “Yes and no. At 60-years-old I found out my biological father was a man I knew to be my uncle.
“I was raised never knowing this and not even sure if he knew. All my parents have passed. I grew up with three sisters. They were all tall/blond/thin. I was short, brunette, and curvy. I never fit in with them. “So, this knew knowledge actually explained a lot.
“The sad part is I almost died when I was born, and I just know my mother thought god was punishing her for having had an affair. I don’t believe in such things, but she did. I don’t blame anyone, I’m not a saint, so I understand how things happen.” Despite the issues they can cause, another user shared how their DNA test help to clear up mysteries about their past.
They said: “I do not regret it. I was adopted and it was a useful tool that helped me find out who my biological family was. Through my test my bio mom found out her father was not the man that raised her, and that was unfortunate, so maybe she regrets that I took it.”
While another was able to confirm a years-long suspicion that the man who raised her dad was not his biological father. Another added: ” After years of suspecting, questioning and never getting answers, and thinking that I was never going to be able to confirm anything because my dad died over a decade ago, I finally have them and it makes so many things make sense.
“I was kind of shocked to confirm my suspicions with science, but it was kind of validating also. Some of my family still won’t accept what I’ve found, but I am relieved to know the truth. Between the non-paternity event and my mum being adopted, there was so much that I didn’t know that I was able to find out by taking the test and researching on Ancestry. Even if my family never comes around, I don’t regret doing it.”
