‘I travelled to Indonesia to try world’s most dangerous feeling theme park ride’

Robin Demyttenaere, 33, has ridden almost 5,000 fairground rides and visited amusement parks all over the world – but he said this was one of the most dangerous

Revellers hang off the ride while it whizzes around

A daring YouTuber has braved one of the world’s most perilous fairground rides and declared he’d “go on it again” despite it feeling like it “will collapse”.

Robin Demyttenaere, 33, a thrill-seeker since the age of 11, has splashed out £87,000 on 5,000 rides across the globe. Recently, he embarked on a three-month adventure to Asia, where he took on ‘the wave’ at a funfair in Medan, Indonesia, a ride notorious for its danger as revellers hang off it while it spins round.

Despite the ride feeling “unsafe”, Robin relished the experience, describing it as “unique and different”. The full-time YouTuber from Aalter, Belgium, said: “I’m not scared because it’s not that high of a ride. The ride is dangerous because of how it makes you feel while you are on it. There is a feeling that the ride will collapse.

The ride

“You can feel and hear the ride clicking, which is not a good noise you want to hear while on a ride. The ride makes you feel unsafe. I liked the ride because it was unique and a different experience than I had had before. The people were lovely, and everyone had a great time, and I would go on it again.”

Since November 2015, Robin has been sharing his adventures on his YouTube channel – Funfair Worldwide. He has sampled rides all over the world, including those at Alton Towers, Drayton Manor, Thorpe Park, Nottingham Goose Fair and Hull Fair.

He recently embarked on a three-month journey from Belgium to China, passing through Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore, before returning to Belgium – all for a cool £9K. While in Indonesia, he made a stop at Medan, also known as Gotham City, where he decided to brave ‘the wave’.

The nickname Gotham City stems from the high crime rate in the city – the largest in North Sumatra, Indonesia. He revealed: “I Googled the biggest amusement park in Indonesia, and I wanted to visit this country to sightsee.

“It’s a very dangerous town, and my first impressions were bad. I wondered why I even went there in the first place. In Europe, that ride is not allowed. It’s dangerous. In Europe, we have the best ride inspections in the world. The chance that something will go wrong is almost zero. But when it does, it is horrible, of course.”

Robin described it as the “craziest” ride he has ever seen. He admitted: “I didn’t understand how this ride worked. I thought it was for a circus act, not a ride, because I saw people hanging off the ride. It’s also really fast, but people found it funny.”

The ride set Robin back £2 for 10 minutes, and it can hold up to 40 thrill-seekers at once. Robin confessed: “I was a little bit nervous before going on the ride. I was not scared, but it gave me an adrenaline rush. Everyone was laughing and smiling, which you know is going to be a good ride.”
