‘I tried Greggs, Wetherspoons, Tesco and Nando’s for first time and there were 2 clear winners’

A US vlogger decided to try some of Britain’s most popular food chains, including Greggs, Wetherspoons, Tesco and Nando’s, and he was left impressed by two in particular

An American vlogger who jetted from New York to London and tried Greggs, Wetherspoons, Tesco and Nando’s has declared two beloved UK eateries top of the pile. Jon Barr, a US YouTuber whose clips showcase his adventures hunting down the most “unusual, affordable, and unforgettable” food experiences, recently set off on a journey to the UK to explore British fast food.

Recruiting the assistance of a local cabbie called Tom, Jon kicked off with the legendary bakery chain, Greggs, and tasted two iconic treats. The first was, naturally, a sausage roll which he branded “salty” and “what I expected” while the second was a steak bake.

It would be the “juicy” latter that captured the ravenous vlogger’s heart, however, as Jon proclaimed that he was a “steak bake guy”. In classic YouTube style, Jon revealed that he would then rate the venues on a tier list, S, A, B, C, D, and F, in descending order of how much he relished them. Greggs kicked off impressively with an A.

Following this was a throwback favourite, the burger restaurant Wimpy, where both he and Tom tried its cheeseburger option. Jon described both the meat and the bun as “fine”.

Rather disappointingly, he branded the combination “just plain” and concluded it as “good” but “maybe not great”, ultimately awarding Wimpy a middle-of-the-road C rating.

He then popped into a Tesco Express to sample a meal deal, choosing a ham, cheese and chicken triple sandwich and expressing his amazement at the cost, calling it the most “incredible cheap eats deal” he’d ever encountered.

Tucking into his selection, Jon observed that it tasted superior to how it “looks” and, after trying his chocolate bar (a Yorkie he’d exchanged with Tom), determined that the meal deal deserved a place in the A tier alongside Greggs.

Tortilla came next on their agenda, where Jon sampled a “super soft” beef burrito whilst confessing his love for both the rice and beans. In the end, he positioned it somewhere between a B- and C+, which translated to a B ranking on his chart.

For their next eating experience, Jon and Tom visited the well-known establishment Nando’s, which Jon appreciated instantly upon entering, commenting on the “polished” vibe and what he termed “African motifs”.

Choosing a medium peri peri chicken butterfly accompanied by peas and chips, Jon explained how the initial bite struck him and how Nando’s had rendered grilled chicken “sexy again”, branding the meat “killer”.

Following their meal, he declared: “I wasn’t sure if anything was going to get the S tier on today’s video, and Nando’s has turned me into a fanboy; S tier for them. They’re going to the top.”

The pair then sampled a rice box, waffle chips and watermelon matcha ice teas from Leon. Jon noted the sauce atop the rice possessed a taste reminiscent of Thai cuisine, though he wasn’t keen on the chips, placing the restaurant in the C tier.

Next up was German Doner Kebab, where he naturally sampled a doner kebab but was left “shocked” by the taste. Later placing it in the A tier, he declared it “delicious” and commended the bread.

Finally, they ventured to sample a legendary British institution, Wetherspoons, specifically The Pommelers Rest. Jon chose a chicken korma, served with naan bread and poppadoms, plus a pint of Ruddles, a combination he described as a “perfect pairing”.

As they departed, Jon remarked: “All right, it’s time for the tier list ranking for Wetherspoon; cheap beer, cheap food, good vibes; S tier for Wetherspoon. I didn’t think I would do two Ss in this video. I didn’t think it was possible.”

Jon’s full ranking

  • Nando’s – S
  • Wetherspoons – S
  • Greggs – A
  • Tesco Express – A
  • German Doner Kebab – A
  • Tortilla – B
  • Wimpy – C
  • Leon – C
