As a special Easter offering, Subway has released a new type of bread by turning their footlong-sized sandwiches into a hot cross bun – so of course I had to try it
Subway has released a brand new Footlong Hot Cross Bun – a typical bun, but with an extra-long twist – just in time for Easter. As you’ll know, a hot cross bun is a popular Easter treat, especially in the UK and usually contains raisins or other dried fruits. It’s distinctively known by the cross marked on the top.
Subway’s version of the Footlong Hot Cross Bun Slice has been described as “a traditionally spiced hot cross bun loaf with sweet sultanas, zesty orange and lemon peel” and is freshly baked in-store everyday. As per the site, it’s best toasted and comes with Cornish salted butter for a sweet and salty combination.

Cathy Goodwin, Culinary & Innovation Director at Subway EMEA, said: “We’re combining the nation’s love of hot cross buns with our bread-baking expertise, we’re excited to unveil our delicious new limited-edition menu items catering to both sweet and savoury fans. Baked fresh daily and full of flavour, we’re sure they’ll be a big hit this Easter, so get them while they’re hot!”
Of course, here at The Mirror, we had to give it a go – and it was surprisingly so good!
My review of Subway’s
Once I saw the packaging, I couldn’t believe that it was a literal hot cross bun the length of the footlong sub, however, after taking a bite, it was pure delight. The sweet and savoury mix of the traditional hot cross bun combined with the butter spread was heavenly. In all honesty, Subway was my first go-to for a hot cross bum treat, but I think this taste test might have changed my mind.
The Footlong Hot Cross Bun Slice is an interesting addition to the menu to say the least but it’s one I welcome and can’t wait to try again this Easter, although I’ll have to make sure I have enough room for it, as I felt stuffed after finishing the entire slice!
Now, I’m all the more excited to try the Cheesy Bacon Hot Cross Bun Toastie – a streaky bacon and American-style cheese sub made into hot cross bun bread and can be either Footlong or 6-inch. It sounds mouth-wateringly good.
Where can you get Subway’s
Subway’s Footlong Hot Cross Bun, as well as the Cheesy Bacon Hot Cross Bun Toastie is available in all Subway restaurants nationwide. The range can be enjoyed until the end of April, or while stocks last. Best to hurry up!
