‘I tried supermarket butters and one beat Harrods and Lurpak’

Picking the right butter in the supermarket can be difficult – so a dairy fan decided to try the most popular brands and supermarkets to determine which one tastes the best

A mum and daughter duo decided to take it upon themselves to determine which brand makes the best butter in a taste test, and she claimed one was better than Harrods and Lurpak.

Butter is a staple ingredient in many households. It’s often a crucial ingredient in baking and cooking recipes, but will also be delicious simply spread on a piece of bread or toast. But with so many options of butter available in supermarkets, it can sometimes feel daunting to decide which brand to choose, especially since they all have subtle differences in taste and texture. To help, a woman named Laura, along with her mum, decided to buy several different butters from different brands and stores – including luxurious Harrods and the industry staple, Lurpak – to determine once and for all which brand has the best butter.

“Okay, so we got the Harrods salted butter, and we also got a bunch of different brands and supermarket butters, and we’re gonna see which is the best one,” Laura explained at the start of her Instagram video, where she and her mum were seen holding up all the different kinds of butter.

Starting off with Kerrygold’s Pure Irish Butter, the mum and daughter duo quickly said ‘mm’ in unison after taking a bite of the fresh bread with a generous serving of the butter.

“I mean, I love Kerrygold,” the mum said, as they agreed the butter was creamy and perfectly salted.

Next up, they tried the French butter with sea salt from M&S, which they agreed wasn’t as nice as Kerrygold.

“Too salty,” Laura stated. “It’s nice, but it’s salty. You can’t use a lot of it.”

Her mum agreed with this, saying it was nice and creamy, but slightly too salted – which she added that some people preferred. They soon moved on to the third butter, which was Essential Waitrose salted butter.

“This is more mild,” Laura said. “It’s still decent, but it’s got less flavour. And it’s less salted.”

The fourth butter was another branded butter, as they went on to taste test Lurpak – often named one of the UK’s favourite butters. But will it live up to the others in the taste test?

After tasting it, Laura – who revealed that Lurpak used to be her favourite butter – said it wasn’t as good as she remembered. She went on to say: “That one didn’t have as much flavour as the Kerrygold and the M&S one, I think.”

Finally, it was time to see how the Harrods butter compared. After struggling to get the packaging open, with Laura’s mum saying they were gonna have to find a new way of storing it after ripping the plastic packaging, it was time to taste it.

The first thing they noticed was that the Harrod’s butter was a lot more yellow compared to the others. After taking a bite of the bread with the butter, Laura’s mum gave her verdict, saying: “Very creamy.”

“Yeah, it’s creamy, but I want it to be more salted,” Laura added, while her mum went on to compare the taste of the butter to that of clotted cream.

In the end, they both agreed that the Harrods butter was one of the best – despite the slight lack of salt. But the Kerrygold butter was the one that ended up winning the overall taste test.

Kerrygold is available in various supermarkets across the UK, including Sainsbury’s and Tesco, as well as on Ocado.
