‘I tried the AI Barbie doll trend – ChatGPT gave me a shock detail I didn’t ask for’

By staff11 April 2025No Comments4 Mins Read

A brand new Barbie trend has descended on social media as thousands of Brits head to an AI platform to create their very own fashion doll – and it’s easier than you might think

Barbiecore is back in full swing as social media users go crazy for new artificial intelligence (AI) trend that turns regular, ordinary people into action figures – with a fashion doll twist.

Using ChatGPT – a free AI platform – thousands of people have been hopping on the trend by asking the bot a few simple prompts to turn them into a Barbie figure. The platform takes images from the user to create a doll-like impersonation, complete with accessories and a branded pink box. I decided to give the toy-like stylisation a go to see how easy it is – and reveal exactly what prompts you need to do the same at home in less than five minutes.

Barbie AI character
This was my first attempt that went wrong

First, I headed to ChatGPT where you need to make a free account to unlock this feature. My first attempt at making the viral figure was unsuccessful as I simply asked the AI bot to “make me the viral Barbie trend doll?”

After uploading a picture of myself, the above image came back. While it was incredible cute in all its bubbly pink glory, it didn’t quite hit the trend of being turned into an actual Barbie doll figure, complete with a box. After digging into the trend a little deeper, I found the exact prompt needed to achieve the perfect look.

How to create your own AI action figure

  1. Open the ChatGPT app or visit it in your web browser.
  2. Upload a photo of yourself to ChatGPT.
  3. Use this prompt: “Develop a realistic action figure (Barbie doll) of the person in this photograph. The toy’s name is written at the top of the box (insert name). The toy’s accessories, which include – (insert accessories to include) – are included in the packaging alongside the figure.

Now, sit back and watch the magic happen.

I’m not sure if my WiFi is just extremely slow, but it took a good five minutes plus for ChatGPT to produce the final image. But the end result was adorable. I had asked for my pet chihuahua to be included as one of the accessories – and it decided to throw in a bonus one. I also asked for a laptop, notebook, camera and phone – all of which it produced perfectly.

I used an image of me on The Mirror’s Pride of Britain Awards red carpet, and was impressed with how accurately it got my outfit. Although it was missing the feather trim from the bottom of the dress, we will let the bot off the hook.

As for accessories, it captured the necklace I was wearing in the image perfectly, and got details like the length and colour of my hair fine-tuned. Overall, I was impressed with how simple this trend was. I’ve been seeing these action figures pop up all over social media – even LinkedIn users are loving the trend.

Celebrities are also joining in on the fun – like popular pastor Michael Todd, who showed his two million Instagram followers how accurate his AI-generated figure was. Politicians such as Donald Trump, Liz Truss, and Keir Starmer have also been transformed into the dolls.

If you don’t like what you see, continue entering more information and ChatGPT will alter the doll to your liking – but be warned, it can take a while. It will become more specific if you include extra information, like the box’s colour or a phrase you would want to see at the bottom. Use your imagination!

Another top tip: attempt to use a different image if the one you’re using isn’t clear enough or the doll doesn’t look like you.
