The Mirror tries the limited edition McDonald’s Shamrock Shake
As the UK gears up to celebrate St Patrick’s Day on Monday, March 17, McDonald’s has introduced a festive treat to mark the occasion: the Shamrock Shake. This vibrant green, peppermint-flavoured milkshake has been a seasonal favourite in the US since its creation in 1967 and is now making its debut in UK restaurants.
Available for a limited time from March 12 to March 25, the Shamrock Shake is priced at £2.19 for a small, £2.69 for a medium, and £3.09 for a large, though prices may vary by location. But what does the peppermint-flavoured milkshake actually taste like? We managed to get our hands on some to try.
While the Shamrock Shake originated in the US, the UK version is somewhat different. The original mint-flavoured shake is topped with whipped cream, whereas in the UK it comes without the added flourish.
Initially, I thought it could go one of two ways – it could either taste like a delicious mint chocolate chip ice cream (minus the chocolate chips), or it could taste like toothpaste.
I wasn’t sure how well peppermint syrup would taste in a milkshake, but the pale green colour was definitely enticing.
It was a little disappointing that the colour wasn’t brighter, but then it could be verging on needing artificial food colouring to enhance the look.
At first taste, the drink was delicious. It had the traditional creamy texture of a McDonald’s milkshake with the added twist of a hint of peppermint.
It definitely wasn’t the strongest flavour, and I think I personally would have liked more syrup. That said, it’s a good all-rounder for those who aren’t traditionally peppermint fans.
The vanilla flavour was also quite strong, suggesting it was their usual recipe with the addition of a peppermint syrup.
McDonald’s said they made the decision to bring the green-coloured drink to the UK following its success with the Grimace Milkshake last month – a blueberry-infused drink.
Fans flocked to their local branch to try the berry-flavoured milkshake after its release, selling the store out nationwide.
The Shamrock Shake’s release coincides perfectly with the UK’s St Patrick’s Day festivities.
In London, the annual St. Patrick’s Festival will take place on Sunday, March 16, featuring a parade from Hyde Park Corner to Trafalgar Square, where attendees can enjoy live music, dance performances, and family-friendly activities.
Cities like Manchester and Belfast are hosting parades and events to celebrate Irish culture and heritage.
The famous fast food branch has also announced that 20p from each shake sold at participating restaurants will be donated to Ronald McDonald House Charities UK, supporting families with children in hospitals across the country.
The Shamrock Shake is available in UK McDonald’s restaurants from March 12 to March 25. Given its limited availability and the excitement surrounding its debut, fans are encouraged to try it before it’s gone.
Whether you’re a longtime admirer of this minty concoction or a curious first-timer, the Shamrock Shake offers a delightful way to join in the St Patrick’s Day celebrations.
So, don your green attire, join the festivities, and treat yourself to a peppermint shake.
