A woman was excited to pay a visit to Singapore’s Changi Airport before her flight – but was left disappointed and ‘creeped out’ by what she found in the early hours of the morning
A globetrotter was left gobsmacked by the unexpected side of Singapore’s Changi Airport, despite its accolade as the world’s top airport.
Jessica Jayne Turner has embarked on a worldwide adventure with her partner Jasper after they sold their home and resigned from their jobs. The duo, capitalising on the booming house selling market, seized the chance to explore new horizons together.
Their journey has taken them through Europe and Asia, often settling in one spot for several weeks at a time, and after a five-week stint in Thailand, they briefly stopped over in Singapore.
Eager to experience the renowned Singapore Changi Airport for a few extra hours before jetting off again, Jessica had high hopes, especially since the airport has been repeatedly praised as one of the globe’s finest. But reality fell short of expectations.
In a TikTok video, Jessica expressed her dismay: “When was someone gonna tell me that the famous waterfall at the Singapore airport isn’t on 24/7? So I arrived at the airport a couple of hours before our flight because I really wanted to go and see the waterfall.”
She continued, detailing the anticlimactic discovery: “So we checked in our bags and then we headed into the jewel, which is where the giant waterfall is, and then it was in this moment that I realised the waterfall isn’t even on.”
She further revealed that the airport’s renowned waterfall, the Jewel Rain Vortex, which has gained internet fame, is switched off during the night and doesn’t spring back to life until 11am. The waterfall in question towers over seven stories high, making it the world’s tallest indoor waterfall. It typically operates from 11am until 10pm on most days.
“We did get to see these trains go past though, which was pretty cool,” Jessica added.
The waterfall wasn’t the only feature out of action in the early hours. Arriving at the airport at 8am, the couple soon discovered that the majority of shops and eateries didn’t open their doors until 10 or 11am either.
“It felt really empty so it was kind of creepy walking around here with nothing open. It sounds really dumb now, but I just assumed that everything at the airport in Singapore would be open 24 hours a day because there’re so many flights coming to and from Singapore Airport,” Jessica confessed in the video.
“But McDonalds was open, so we ended up getting some food in there. The airport itself does just feel so clean, so fancy, it’s just a really nice place.”
The pair were later seen boarding a new flight to continue their journey elsewhere. The Express has contacted Jessica for further comment.
