Copper hair is trending this autumn, so Mirror’s shopping writer Grace put a £15 wash-out tint to the test to see if she could go pumpkin spice copper for the weekend
I decided to lean fully into autumn this weekend and give my hair a seasonal refresh, and what better shade to go than pumpkin spice copper? Copper has become one of the most popular hair colours for autumn, with searches for “copper hair dye” up 87% in the UK over the past three months.
And I couldn’t resist the chance to try out this trending auburn tone myself. When I was younger, my hair was naturally ginger and vibrant, but as I’ve got older, it’s slowly faded into a blonde/brown hybrid that I’m getting a bit tired of.
However, rather than committing to anything permanent, which is really not my style, I thought a tinted gloss or a colour-depositing mask would work best. After some extensive research, I settled on trying out a Josh Wood Colour Hair Gloss.

Josh Wood Colour Copper Gold Hair Gloss
A semi-permanent home hair colour treatment mask enriched with perilla oil and shea butter that helps to deeply condition your locks, while providing a colour refresh. Perfect for in between salon visits and those who want a low-commitment way to try out different hair colours.
Easy to use; colour payoff is great; leaves hair feeling smooth and looking glossy; perfect for those who prefer low commitment/don’t want to use permanent dyes
Fades fast and darker colours can stain towels or clothing
My hair picks up colour pigments quite well, and I had doubts the Copper Gold tint would turn my hair a bit too unnatural orange for my liking. So I decided to mix Copper Gold with a small amount of Caramel, and the results were my perfect shade.
The gloss, priced at £15 on Amazon, is essentially a semi-permanent home hair colour treatment mask enriched with perilla oil and shea butter that helps to deeply condition your locks, while providing a colour refresh.
The process couldn’t have been easier. Simply apply the product like you would a hair mask to clean, damp hair, leave it to work its magic for 10-20 minutes (I recommend 20), and rinse out. In less than 30 minutes, my hair was left with a rich coppery glow that gave me the exact autumn vibes I was looking for.
What surprised me the most was the gloss. My hair looked shinier, smoother, and healthier, almost like I’d had a salon treatment.
The gloss is supposed to last for up to six washes, so it’s the perfect low-commitment way to experiment with different hair colours.
My tint mostly washed out after around three washes. This is largely because red pigments don’t lock into the hair cuticle as well as other colours, making copper tones far harder to maintain than browns and blondes, so I was not surprised to see the tint wash out pretty quickly.
Considering I have some leftover bleach in the ends of my hair from a balayage last summer, I was sceptical that the gloss would cling unevenly to patches of light in my hair, but I had no issue with this at all.
Overall, if you’re looking to go copper long-term for autumn, this gloss isn’t the way. However, if you want to give your hair a temporary copper boost or are looking for ways to refresh your locks in between salon visits, this £15 buy is worth every penny.
