‘I work in charity shop and you stop buying one gift as it’s always donated’

A charity shop worker, who advices people on the do’s and don’ts of donating their second hand items, insists that one popular gift is being donated too often – and she insists people stop buying it

When it comes to buying gifts for our loved ones, many of us often think we have come up with a unique idea that they will really like and cherish. However, it’s typical after searching the likes of ‘gifts for him’ or ‘presents for grandparents’ that often we end up with similar ideas. One charity shop worker insists that people stop buying one homeware gift for their friends as far too often they end up getting donated.

While many people use apps like Depop, eBay and Vinted, many enjoy donating their unwanted items to second-hand outlets and charity shops. Meg, who dubs herself a “charity shop clown”, shares her experiences online via her TikTok page @alottameg as a charity shop manager. Recently she told her 28,000 followers that she is “begging” them to “stop frivolously buying s***”.

@alottameg said: “Your friends don’t want a f***ing cheeseboard for Christmas. And do you know how I know that, because we get donated about 500 of them every year and not just after Christmas either, all the time I’m getting brand new unused mini cheeseboard sets, cheese knives, s*** like that.”

She also noted that the charity shop she works in cannot even put the products out as they cannot have sharp items in the shop. “Your friends don’t want them,” she insisted.

She also said she is “sick” of seeing people donated pants with elephants printed on them that people often wear to go travelling. “Stop frivolously buying things guys, come on,” she added.

“I love elephant trousers and I wouldn’t actually mind a mini cheeseboard,” commented one. “I’d happily accept a mini cheeseboard set,” added another.

One noted: “Maybe if my friends didn’t keep loosing their mini cheeseboard set, I wouldn’t have to keep buying them another one.” Another shared: “My mum loves those elephant trousers. She wears them religiously. She also has a surplus because she works in a charter shop.”

Previously Meg ranted about people using charity shops for the “wrong” reason; she claims people are using them like a “dumping ground”.

In a TikTok video, she explained the woman and her friend were sorting through some items they had brought it. Meg said: “And as they were going through it, her friend said, ‘don’t you want to keep this bag’, and she turns to her friend and goes ‘no it’s dirty, it’s broken… the charity shop can have that bag’.”

Furious Meg added: “Oh can we? We can have your dirty, broken bag that you don’t want… thank you. Thank you so much.

“And the donation she gave was great, but I think it’s embarrassing and disrespectful to literally in front of a charity shop worker, admit that you’re giving something that’s dirty and broken.”

She noted if you would not buy an item from a charity shop, and if you are looking at an item “almost with disgust”, then why would you donate it?
