‘I worked in Wetherspoons – code word for rude customers helped us get secret revenge’

By staff31 October 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

Employees at Wetherspoons have long shared their experiences of working for the chain, including the good, the bad, and the ugly. Now, one staff member has revealed just how they seek revenge on rude customers

Wetherspoons is a staple in British culture, with hundreds of its pubs scattered across the country. Known for their bargain-loving meals and cheap drinks, you really can’t go wrong – unless you disrespect the staff.

Employees have revealed what it’s really like to work for one of the biggest UK chains and how they seek revenge if customers behave inappropriately. One staff member has recalled how they shouted back at rude customers and even banned someone from the pub.

Sharing their experience of working at Wetherspoons, they revealed: “I worked Friday and Saturday nights while training as a nurse. I’d get shouted at all day as a nurse and found it cathartic being able to shout back in Spoons when people were rude without repercussions.

Writing on Reddit, they added: “An older guy got a crush on me and used to talk to me while I cleaned the smaller bar we shut early. He gave me a valentine’s card. I told a manager I was creeped out, they watched him looking for me on the cameras, showed the footage to a bouncer, and he was never allowed in again.”

But this isn’t all. The employee then revealed a secret form of revenge they dubbed the “t**t tax.”

They claimed: “On New Year’s Eve we were given a list of all the stock lost over the year (e.g. broken bottles) and told to add the drinks onto drink people orders -we did it to anyone who was rude to us and called it the t**t tax.”

Noting a downside to working for the pub, the employee also commented: “Had to serve under the speakers, we were given ear plugs, but then you couldn’t hear the orders – my hearing has never been the same.”

The Reddit post received a flurry of comments, and others joined in to share their stories. Another former staff member said: “I worked for Spoons for about 2 years after uni, just over a decade ago.

“I met my partner there and all our close group of friends (who are our core group to this day, though none of us work there any more). Hospitality camaraderie is like nothing else!

“It had most of the downsides of any other hospo job (d***head customers, last-minute rotas, low pay) but we always got our mandated breaks, which was a plus. Heavily discounted food on shift and decent discounts when not on shift.

“One of my favourite stories was when we found multiple opened (clean) condoms on a table that a few older gents were sitting at. I’m not sure why they’d been playing with them but as we were cleaning down post-close, we found one too many packets, meaning there was a condom missing out there somewhere. Took us ages until we found it nestled in a sauce holder on a nearby table.”
