Ibiza Airport chaos as rain leaks inside with major weather alert for resorts

Spain’s weather agency has issued a red weather alert for Formentera and Ibiza, where torrents of rain were seen pouring into the island’s airport amid extreme weather conditions

Extreme weather is wreaking havoc on a popular British holiday hotspot as rain was seen leaking through the roof of Ibiza Airport.

Several popular Spanish resorts are under major alert after severe flooding saw cars being submerged under water.

A red weather alert has been issued for holidaymakers heading to the Balearic party island amid expectations of widespread travel disruption.

Footage shared on social media shows torrential downpours coming down through the ceiling of the airport, pouring on to the luggage carousels. The social media user captioned the shocking video: “It’s raining inside Ibiza airport.”

Earlier, travellers were warned to brace themselves for the torrents in Ibiza and Formentera. There is a high risk of flooding and sudden surges in waterways.

Spanish weather officials warned: “Torrential rains in Ibiza and Formentera. More than 180 mm in twelve hours. Caution! Extraordinary danger. There may be flooding and sudden rises in waterways. The alert is in effect until 16:00 h.”

Others have taken to social media to show the situation in other parts of the island. One clip shows motorists forced to drive through window-high floodwaters.

It comes a week after a boy died and his father was reported missing after terrifying floods struck a popular area of Spain for British tourists.

The storms brought heavy rain and flooding across Spain with the Cataluna region in the northeast worst affected. The national weather agency Aemet recorded up to 20 litres of rainfall falling per hour, issuing a yellow warning. Tragically the body of a boy, believed to be aged 11 or 12, has been found in the flooded River Anoia by the town of Sant Pere de Riudebitlles, near Barcelona.

Catalan Minister of the Interior, Núria Parlon, confirmed that emergency services had found the boy and that a search was ongoing for the father, with the names not released.

Local media reported witnesses saying the car continued down a road which was flooded. Rescue teams were “covering zone by zone” the area in order to find the father.

It is believed the man could have been swept some distance by the 2.5m high floods in the river which is normally a dry riverbed.
