‘Ideal’ temperature to heat your home during cold weather to avoid ‘frozen pipes’

By staff14 November 2025No Comments2 Mins Read

As the UK braces for a potential chilly weather, it’s important for homeowners to take precautions to prevent damage to their homes.

It’s essential for householders to get their homes ready to prevent possible damage during the colder months. The falling temperatures increase the likelihood of household pipes freezing and bursting, which could cause significant damage to plumbing and heating systems.

While Google might appear useful for a quick solution, Yell experts warn against DIY defrosting attempts as this could lead to burst pipes – it’s better left to experienced professionals.

Fortunately, there are simple steps homeowners can implement, according to plumbing expert David Doran from Blackstone Plumbing and Heating Ltd.

One key recommendation is ensuring your thermostat is properly set. Despite the urge to crank up the heating on bitter days, David suggests maintaining it between 18-20C.

Keeping the thermostat at a consistent 18 degrees reduces the risk of pipes freezing. Many contemporary heating systems include a “frost protection” mode that keeps your home’s temperature above freezing whilst saving energy, reports the Express.

Importantly, if you’re planning to be away or want to cut heating costs during winter, it’s advisable not to turn the heating off entirely. It’s recommended to lower the temperature to roughly 15-17C (59-63F) when you’re asleep or not at home.

This not only saves energy but also prevents your house from getting too cold.

You might also want to schedule regular heating intervals throughout the day to keep your pipes warm and reduce the chance of them freezing.

Furthermore, it’s vital to have your boiler serviced regularly to ensure it’s operating optimally, providing steady heat across your property.

David advises having your boiler inspected annually for safe and efficient functioning. Regular servicing can identify leaks, blockages, and verify the safety of devices, helping to avert serious problems like gas leaks or carbon monoxide poisoning.

Not only does this enhance efficiency and help save on energy bills, but many warranties and insurance policies also require annual servicing.
