‘I’m a Canadian visiting Liverpool – one big difference to London left me gobsmacked’

A man who moved to the UK from Canada has shared his thoughts after visiting Liverpool for the first time, and one particular observation about Scousers left him gobsmacked

A Canadian man has revealed his thoughts on Liverpool and Scousers following his first ever trip to the city, and people were quick to agree with his observations.

Matt Giffen is a Canadian man who’s been living in the UK for three months, having crossed the pond to move in with his British girlfriend, Summer Fox, in London. Since arriving back in April, Matt has been documenting his adventures on social media as he explores Britain’s most popular places while also trying local foods and snacks. In his latest post, he shared his thoughts after a five-day visit to Liverpool, in North West England.

“I just spent five days in Liverpool for the first time, so I wanted to share my honest thoughts with you guys,” he said at the start of his Instagram video.

And there was one thing which left him gobsmacked in particular, and it’s a stark contrast to London – how nice and accommodating Scousers had been during his visit.

“The first thing I’ll say is that it is very true about what they say about northern England. The more north you go, the friendlier people are. The people in Liverpool were so approachable, so nice,” Matt said.

He continued by highlighting how many locals took immense pride in being Scouse, which he reckoned contributed to the city’s ‘community spirit’ – drawing parallels to his homeland of Canada.

“Somebody said something to me on the first day that I got there that stuck with me. She said ‘you come to Liverpool feeling like a stranger, and you leave a part of the family’, which is 100% true. Like, I couldn’t walk down one single street without having a full blown conversation with somebody,” he told his viewers.

However, he went on to confess: “I didn’t know what you guys were saying like 90% of the time, but I was having so much fun.”

His next point was that he’d found ‘the Scouse breed’ really attractive, saying: “Y’all were just like a good looking bunch.”

The only downside for him was Liverpool’s distance from London, as he noted it would be easier to visit if it were closer.

However, he did have one negative thing to say about Liverpool, which was the fact that it was a far way to travel from London, saying he’d visit more often if it’d been closer.

“Maybe that’s what gives it its magic, because it is that far, and hard to get to, so it’s just hard for like Londonese people to get there, you know what I mean?” he then said.

This minor issue didn’t dampen his enthusiasm, as he revealed plans to possibly settle down in Liverpool: “Like if I had to pick somewhere to raise my family here in the UK with my British girlfriend, from what I know right now, I would 100% pick Liverpool,” he said. “Imagine your little kid running around with a Scouse accent. That’s gotta be the greatest thing in the entire world.”

Grateful for the experience, he concluded: “I just wanted to say thank you guys for the amazing hospitality, we’ll for sure be coming back one day,” he said.

The video soon sparked a flurry of comments, with many viewers agreeing with what Matt had said.

“You’ve peaked at Liverpool. Might as well go home,” quipped one user, while another shared: “So true, I go down to Liverpool from Glasgow once a year for a few days, absolutely love it, the people are amazing, always a brilliant vibe.”

Another viewer chimed in with: “You know what, it’s b***dy great to hear this lovely (and true) feedback from you because [to be honest] Scousers are given a hard time in our own country. I think when people come they realise the truth but the amount of negativity and undeserved stereotypes about stealing and having a victim mentality is common. So thanks and safe travels.”
