‘I’m a driving instructor and this is how you should really signal at roundabouts’

By staff26 September 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

Roundabout signalling is one of the most common causes of minor faults during driving tests, with indicating incorrectly potentially misleading other road users about your intentions behind the wheel

An influencer driving instructor shared essential advice for learner drivers on TikTok about how to indicate correctly at roundabouts, potentially saving you the cost and inconvenience of resists.

After one of his pupils became confused during a mock driving test, Lee from Lee Albon Driving School gave the simplest and most effective advice imaginable about how to proceed. His explanation has already resonated with thousands of viewers who have struggled with the very same question.

The short video begins with Lee introducing his pupil Layla, who is taking the mock test. Like a great many learners, she hesitates when approaching a roundabout and is unsure whether an indicator is needed.

Lee helpfully narrated the situation: “Here we have Layla, who is on her mock test and like many other learner drivers, she sometimes gets confused about which way to signal at the roundabout.”

Layla asked: “Do you have to put an indicator on for that?” As Lee points out, examiners cannot provide direct instruction during a test. “I can’t tell you because we’re on a test. Do what you think is best. Just ask yourself which way you’re going,” he replied.

Layla confirmed “Straight forward”, to which Lee responded with a direct and decisive: “Okay, so do you need a signal?” She answers “No”.

Stepping out of assessment mode, Lee then broke down his reasoning in simple terms: “So we’ll just quickly come out of mock test mode now. If you’re on a test there and you were asking, ‘Do I need a signal?’ In your head, ask yourself another question: which way am I going? And you said to me ‘straight forward’ — that answers your question.”

He helpfully stressed why signalling incorrectly causes problems: “So if you’d signalled right then and gone straight, you would have failed… because you’re confusing other drivers, aren’t you?”

Lee’s core advice is that before indicating, drivers should always ask themselves whether they are going left, right, or straight on. If it’s left, signal left. If it’s right, signal right. If it’s straight, no signal is required until exiting the roundabout, when a left indicator is used to confirm the manoeuvre.

“It’s difficult to do that under a pressure situation,” Lee acknowledged, recognising the nerves that come with test day, “but you can do it.”

Roundabout signalling is one of the most common causes of minor faults during driving tests, with indicating incorrectly potentially misleading other road users about your intentions behind the wheel. By breaking it down in a practical way, Lee’s TikTok shows how you can make roundabout driving less daunting, particularly during your driving test.
