I’m a pharmacist– these ‘unsexy’ products are only things that actually work for skin concerns

Despite many of us sharing our best skincare and beauty finds in the most aesthetic ways, one expert has shared the more ‘unsexy’ items she said really work.

Riya, a Bexley-based aesthetician and qualified dispensing pharmacist shared some of her top picks when it comes to genuine good products. Posting under the name @pharmaestheticsbyriya on TikTok she shared what is worth spending your money on when it comes to skincare and products to help boost confidence.

Helping people “cut through the noise” when it comes to the beauty aisle, Riya visited Boots and uploaded some of her products she can’t live without.

Firstly, she shared a snap of a tube of Kelocote, a medical grade silicone gel (£19.50) which she called “great” when trying to prevent scars. It can also be used after having surgery, micro-needling or radio frequency aesthetic treatments and it can be used to reduce raised acne scars.

Riya also hailed The Ordinary Glycolic Acid (£7.70), a gentle yet effective exfoliating toner designed to refine skin texture and boost radiance. With consistent use it improves skin texture, reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and leaves the skin looking refreshed and revitalised.

Next up was a bottle of Hibiwash antiseptic solution (£8.65) that she said can be used on acne prone areas of the skin, wound cleaning or as a pre-shaving or waxing wash. Riya also recommended Boots own label Cracked Heel Balm (8.99), which she said is a “great dupe for Flexitol and is just as good”. The expert also highlighted it contains 25% urea which is the “best thing for dry, cracked heels”.

Another recommendation was the Natrium Body Scrub and Mask (£21) that helps KP – which she explained as the small rough bumps on arms and thighs, that can also target ingrown hairs and can prime your skin well before fake tanning. Other products in her recommendations were the Purified Power Patches (£7.99), a tub of Vaseline (£2.99) which she simply called a ‘must have’, a tube of Bepanthen (£3.85) nappy cream that “does so much more”. She said it can be used as a lip balm, treating minor cuts, dry and cracked skin and even chafing.

She also urged people to swap out Femfresh and use QV Gentle Wash (£10.49) instead as it contains no irritants and won’t disrupt pH balance either. Lastly, she said everyone should be using Driclor (£8), a heavy duty antiperspirant which promises to stop any embarrassing sweat patches appearing on your clothes.

“If your standard deodorants are not cutting it, this is what you need! Apply at night and you’ll be ready to go for the next day sweat-free,” she said.

People were loving her insightful video and with over two million views it quickly went viral. One person commented: “I feel like the more aesthetic a product, the worse it is for your skin. Always second guess any product that looks good,” and a second penned: “Okay you’ve honestly just saved my life with most of these thank you for this video.”
