As the temperature drops, thousands of spiders are expected to invade British homes – but there’s a natural way to keep them at bay
Autumn is here, and with it comes the dreaded spider season. Thousands of eight-legged critters are set to invade British homes in the coming weeks, leaving many homeowners feeling uneasy.
But before you reach for harmful and expensive chemical sprays, there’s a safer – and greener – solution to keep these unwelcome guests at bay.
The eco-friendly and stylish way to tackle spider invasions during the colder months is houseplants. Plant experts from Beards & Daisies, a UK-based online houseplant retailer, have shared everything you need to know to fend off spiders naturally.
Jo Lambell, founder of Beards & Daisies and houseplant expert, says: “Many people don’t realise that certain houseplants can keep spiders out.”
Connor Towning, Lead Horticulturist at the same company, explains that some aromatic indoor plants not only enhance aesthetics, but they also naturally deter spiders, reports the Express.
“Forget traditional conkers: plants like lavender, peppermint, citronella, and eucalyptus release scents spiders hate, keeping your home far less inviting to them,” says Connor.
There’s a list of five plants that spiders detest which homeowners can place on windowsills, doorways, and corners where spiders are most likely to appear.
Best spider-repelling plants and tips for growth
Lavender: Known for its calming scent, lavender is a traditional choice for keeping homes spider-free as its strong, sharp floral aroma is unpleasant and overpowering to them. Jo recommends placing potted lavender near sunny windowsills and ensuring it has well-draining soil.
Regular pruning promotes healthy growth and more aromatic blooms.
Peppermint: The menthol in peppermint irritates spiders’ senses, causing them to avoid the area. Highly adaptable, peppermint can thrive in pots indoors or in small herb gardens.
Jo suggests watering it moderately and keeping it in bright, indirect light. For an extra spider-deterrent boost, crush a few leaves and place them around corners or create a simple peppermint spray.
Citronella: Famous for warding off mosquitoes, citronella also deters spiders. Jo advises placing it in a bright spot and trimming it regularly.
Its fresh leaves can also be used in DIY sprays for a double benefit.
Eucalyptus: Both fresh eucalyptus leaves and essential oils naturally repel spiders as they dislike the strong scent. Jo recommends growing dwarf eucalyptus varieties in bright, well-ventilated areas.
Even snipping a few stems and placing them around the home adds fragrance and function.
Rosemary and Lemon Balm: Aromatic herbs like rosemary and lemon balm subtly repel insects due to their potent aroma.
Jo suggests using medium-sized pots with well-draining soil and rotating them occasionally for even light exposure. The fragrances of these herbs become stronger when the leaves are gently rubbed or crushed.
For those who fancy a more hands-on method, dried herbs or essential oil sprays made from these plants can also be utilised to naturally repel spiders from your house.
